Prevent Leakage by Replacing Your Automatic Transmission Cooling Hose

Your car's automatic transmission requires enough fluid to run properly. When your transmission cooling hoses wear out, they have a huge tendency to leak. When this happens, you are at risk of suffering from harsh shifts in all gears. Worse, it can eventually lead to transmission slippage.

Change your transmission cooling hoses with this step by step procedure:

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools to be used:

  • Flashlight
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Screwdriver
  • Drip pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Flare nut wrench
  • Transmission fluid
  • Car's manual

Step 1: Park your vehicle on a firm surface and block at least one of the rear wheels. Let the engine cool down completely.

Step 2:Raise your car's front off the ground using a jack. Secure it with jack stands to ensure safety while doing your car repair.

Step 3:Get under your vehicle and find the transmission drain pan, near the driver's side. Put a drip pan directly below the drain pan to catch the fluid. Using a socket wrench, unbolt the transmission pan. Drain the fluid completely for 10-15 minutes then return the drain bolt.

Step 4:Determine where your transmission cooling hoses are. Look for metal lines that pass through the transmission into the radiator. Inspect them for leaks.

Step 5: Disconnect the fittings using a wrench. Pick up the drip pan and again, drain the transmission fluid. Using a flare nut wrench, take off the nuts and remove the old transmission hoses.

Step 6:Connect the new transmission cooling hoses using the old nuts. Make sure that you attach them securely, and in the same order as you removed them.

Step 7:Remove your car from the jack stands. Open the hood to find the transmission dipstick. Pull it out of the metal tube and use a funnel to pour in adequate amount of transmission fluid. Refer to your car's manual to know the appropriate fluid level needed. Return the dipstick to its place and close the hood.
