Steps in Preparing the Transmission for Shift Kit Installation

Things you'll need:
- Drill and .89 and .76 drill bits
- 3/8-inch drive ASE socket and ratchet set (1/4" to 7/8")
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Creeper
- Transmission fluid drain pan
- C-6 shift kit
- Clean rags
- Brake parts cleaner
- Vehicle operator's and service manual
Step 1: Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and securely support it with jack stands. Drain the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission pan's drain plug. Replace the plug and take off the drain pan from the bottom of the vehicle. For transmissions without a drain plug, you have to unbolt the drain pan.
Step 2: Unscrew the bolts securing the pan to the transmission. Then, set the bolts aside so that you can inspect and clean them. Take note of the gearshift's and kick-down levers' location based on their proximity to the valve body. After reinstalling the valve body, put the shift lever back into its slot.
Step 3: Remove the bolts holding the valve body to the transmission and lower the valve body and its screen together. Take off the bolts that secure the screen to the valve body. Then, check the screen and the pan's bottom for metal particles or filings that have to be removed.
Step 4: Get a clean rag, spray brake parts cleaner into the rag, and wipe down the gasket mating surfaces so the new gaskets will be properly sealed. Carefully spray around the mating surfaces of the pan and the transmission. CAUTION: Avoid spraying brake parts cleaner directly into the transmission as this can damage the system.
Once all these preparatory steps are done, you will be ready for spring and check ball replacement and other steps necessary in installing your C-6 transmission shift kit.
