Bed Rail Cap Products

The pickup truck's bed rail deserves all the protection it can get. Since that spacious truck bed is constantly used for loading cargo, damage to the bed rail will surely follow. A scratched and dented bed rail is definitely not good to look at. This damage can also lead to the premature wear of the pickup truck's cargo area. Truck owners must address the root of the problem by using a reliable and long-lasting Bed Rail Cap. Truck owners can really rely on this cap to protect the bed rails and the tail gate because it is made from durable materials. It is typically made of stainless steel that is highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation. This quality is very important since the bed rail is always exposed to elements like extreme sunlight and rain that cause rust buildup. Most bed rail caps these days are designed to make installation as easy as possible, so car owners can easily do the task even if they are just beginners in DIY repair and customization. The fact that some of these caps are designed with an additional double-sided tape should make installation more convenient. This makes trimming, cutting, and drilling unnecessary. With the right kind of bed rail caps, a truck will not only have excellent protection but an enhanced look as well. Car owners must be careful in selecting bed rail caps for their ride. Picking Bed Rail Caps for Your Truck

Bed rail caps are a practical purchase for any truck owner. Not only do they add style, but they also protect the paint job and body work against the bumps and bruises from cargo. When choosing bed rail caps, here are some things to considerations.

Looks and design

Bed rail caps are a visual treat that add a twist to your normal-looking truck. They come in different styles and finishes like chrome, matte, smooth black plastic, hard rubber and polished steel. Certain surfaces look better on certain truck colors, so a little mix and match experiment may be needed.

Manufacturers put more variety to the simple bed rail cap through different patterns. Metal caps can have a diamond design, while black caps have lines and grooves. For the minimalist, both metal and black caps have the simple, smooth style, which also adds style points.

Remember to balance style with functionality. Caps have no use if they wouldn't be able to protect your rails against different stresses. They need to be able to take the impact of loads being dropped or those sliding to the side so that body damage can be avoided. They should also be durable enough to handle pressure from ropes when securing the cargo. Even bad weather should be no challenge to the toughness of your caps.

Sadly, some caps, no matter how good their design is, are not always fit for such a task. If possible, check the cap to see if they appear heavy duty or not. A sharp eye can tell if a cap is well made. Simply touching, feeling and lifting the cap can give you an idea if they will be a good purchase or not.

Installation and removal

Caps aren't the only add-ons you can place on the truck's bed. Depending on the truck's load, sliding covers, hard shells and the like are needed instead of bed rail caps which get in the way of these other accessories. Once you need to make these adjustments to your truck, the bed rail caps should be easy to remove and reinstall.

Truck Bed Rail Cap Installation

Bed rail caps protect truck railings especially if you want to carry cargo on the bed. Accidental dropping of cargo during loading and unloading makes bed rails prone to bumps and dents. During travel, an unsecured load can slide only to damage the rails. It is the caps' job to protect your rails from the abuse of the cargo.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Things Needed

  • Car soap
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dry rags
  • Soft, clean surface (blanket, carpet, etc.)
  • Double-sided adhesive tape (if necessary)
  • Grease pencil (if necessary)
  • Scissors or utility knife
  • Bed rail caps

Step 1: Before installing the caps, rub the rails using dry rags with car soap or rubbing alcohol to remove any wax and dirt. Make sure that the rails are dry after cleaning. The cap's adhesive will not work well even on slightly moist rails.

Step 2: Check the underside of the bed rail caps to see if it is pre-lined with adhesive tape. If so, lay the caps on a soft, clean surface to remove the plastic covering which will expose the tape. If the caps are not pre-lined with tape, lightly place them on the rails and trace the edges with a pencil. Remove the caps and place them on a soft surface. Then, stretch and expose the double-sided tape on the rail inside the pencil marks.

Step 3: Carefully place the caps on the rails, making sure that they are perfectly aligned. Lightly press on the caps so that they can be replaced to make adjustments. Apply heavy pressure only when alignment is certain.

Step 4: Finish the job by trimming any excess tape with a utility knife or a pair of scissors and by erasing the pencil marks.

The whole process will take less than 1 hour.

  • Do the job in a shaded area to avoid a hot surface during installation.
  • Work on one rail at a time so that the adhesives will not dry because of prolonged air exposure.
  • Avoid getting the rails wet to ensure the adhesives are secured properly.
