Tips on How to Find the Right Bumper Cover
Your car has bumpers to protect you and the other parts of your vehicle. They absorb a lot of the energy of an impact, which is why they are an essential part of your car. To reinforce your car's bumpers, you should get good bumper covers. Read on to find out how to get the right cover for your bumper.
What is a bumper cover?
A bumper cover is a part made using either plastic or fiberglass that goes directly over the bumper. It is available in a wide variety of colors and styles. Some covers are made for a specific model while others are made to fit a wide range of vehicles.
What does the bumper cover do?
The main purpose of the bumper cover is to reinforce and strengthen the bumper and improve its ability to absorb the energy of a collision.
Aside from that, the bumper cover also serves an aesthetic purpose. With the right cover, the car can look sleeker and more attractive.
Why get a bumper cover?
Adding a bumper cover is one of the easiest and most economical ways of improving the protection your car has against collisions. It is also one of the quickest ways to enhance the way your vehicle looks.
Which bumper cover to get?
The first thing you have to consider is the fit. Although there are covers that are made to fit many different vehicle models, we recommend that you go for a cover that was specifically designed for your car. This will ensure that the cover will fit perfectly.
In terms of design, make sure you get a cover that will match the overall look of your vehicle. We believe that simple and sleek designs will always look better than anything that's too garish or gaudy.
We also suggest that you look at covers that have air dams, fog lights, or mini grilles. Aside from additional protection, these types of covers give you some other different benefits. For instance, the one with fog lamps will help improve your visibility in bad conditions (provided, of course, that you don't already have fog lamps built in).
What to look for in a bumper cover?
Make sure the cover that you get comes with a complete installation manual. Putting the cover on by yourself will save you a pretty significant amount of money.
Finally, choose only products from established brands. That way, you can be sure of quality, reliability, and durability.
Bumper Covers: Replace or Repair?
The bumper covers are the plastic or fiberglass covers that people commonly refer to as the bumper. They suffer a lot of abuse and are usually damaged or dinged. The decision to repair your current cover or replace it with a new one will largely depend on how badly damaged the current one is. If it only has minor scratches and dents, then repairing it would be more economical than replacing it. If the damage is pretty big, however, you'd be better off getting a new one.
In most cases, repairing the cover will suffice. Here are the tools you need and the steps to follow so you can fix your bumper cover.
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Tools and materials that you'll need:
- Sandpaper (different grit sizes)
- Plastic squeegee
- Body filler
- Grease remover
- Masking tape
Step 1: Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the damaged area of the cover. Sand the area until it's smooth. If there is a dent, sand the entire dent, including inside it and around its edges.
Step 2: Get the flexible body filler. Using the squeegee, apply a thick layer of the filler over the damaged area. Fill dents, holes, and tears with filler and make sure the filler goes inside and all over the surrounding areas. Leave filler to dry for one hour.
Step 3: Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the filler smooth. Make sure you sand until the filler is completely flush with its surrounding areas. Sand again using 220-grit sandpaper to smoothen the rough spots left by the 120-grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface with wax and grease remover. Place masking tape and paper around the area.
Step 4: Spray repaired area with primer. Spray from about 6 to 8 inches using left to right strokes only. Let the primer dry for 30 minutes then sand the repaired area with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe surface with wax and grease remover.
Step 5: Apply three to four thin coats of paint. Spray from 6 to 8 inches using left to right strokes only. Wait 10 minutes before each coat of paint. Apply three to four thin coats of clear coat paint using the same technique as the color paint. Pull masking tape and paper around the surrounding area so it won't stick.
Wait for a full day before handling the area again. Your bumper cover will be as good as new.
