Factors to Consider When Buying Cab Corner Repair Panels

After some time, your truck's cab corners may rust or dent because of constant exposure to corrosion-causing materials and debris such as rocks and road salt. Once the corners are rusted, moisture and harmful debris will reach and damage the interior of your vehicle. But aside from the damages they may cause, rusted cab corners will also be eyesores. These are the reasons why if the corners of your vehicle's cabs are damaged, they should be patched up immediately. However, although doing the necessary repairs is relatively easy, buying the parts that you will need isn't. To help you with this task, here's a list of the things that you need to consider when buying cab corner repair panels.

Your car's make

Not all car parts are made equal. Because of this, car parts do not follow the "one size fits all" principle. So if you're looking for a cab corner repair panel, here's a tip: take note of your car's make and model. For instance, if you have a 2002 Chevrolet S10, then you will need a repair panel that can be screwed or welded into place. If you'll check a car parts catalog, this type of repair panel typically costs around 54 USD. Though it's cheap, this panel will not fit the cab corner of, for instance, a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500.

The best brand

Because cab corner repair panels are very handy, many car parts manufacturers are making them these days. This is the reason why you'll probably be confused as to which brand you have to choose to get that high-quality repair panel for your car. One way to solve this problem is to read brand reviews. These reviews are written by automobile experts and car owners, and they list the strengths and weaknesses of different brands. What's more, brand reviews sometimes enumerate the best and worst products of some manufacturers. Indeed, by reading these reviews, you'll have an inkling as to which brand is the best for you and your car.

Cab Corner Repair Panel: Easy Installation in 10 Steps

Because of constant exposure to water, extreme temperatures, and road salt, your car's cab corners eventually become eyesores because of rust and holes. Aside from being unsightly, rusted cab corners allow rain and moisture to enter your vehicle. Thus, car seats and other interior accessories get damaged. To avoid these problems, rusted corners should be fixed immediately with a cab corner repair panel. This guide will teach you how you can use this repair panel at home and with the help of a few tools.

Difficulty level: Moderate

What you'll need:

  • Cab corner repair panel
  • Permanent marker
  • 60-grit flapper wheel
  • MIG welder
  • Aviation snips
  • Body hammer
  • Welding hood
  • Angle grinder

Step 1: Park your car on level ground so that the corners are not leaning too much on a certain side.

Step 2: Place the repair panel on the area that needs to be repaired. Once it's aligned, trace around it with a permanent marker. Remove the panel after tracing.

Step 3: Using the aviation snips, cut the area that you marker. Don't forget to straighten the rugged edges with the body hammer.

Step 4: Clean old paint and rust from the damaged area. Do this with the angle grinder that is attached to a 60-grit flapper wheel. To avoid damaging other parts of the vehicle, stop using the angle grinder once the area is clean and smooth enough.

Step 5: Prepare the MIG welder. Do this by connecting the welder to the cab of your vehicle. Then, set the wire and heat speed so it can weld 24-gauge carbon steel.

Step 6: Once the welder is set, put on your welding hood.

Step 7: Attach the repair panel to the cut you made on the cab corner. Once it's aligned, weld one of the corners using the MIG welder. Press the trigger, and release it after two seconds.

Step 8: Place tack welds around the panel every 1/2 inch to make sure that it won't fall off.

Step 9: After completing the tack welds, make a constant weld along the tacks. Let the panel cool for a few minutes so you won't get burned by the hot metal.

Step 10: Use the angle grinder and 60-grit flapper to make the weld smooth. If there are low spots, use the body hammer to even them out.

Post-installation tip: Once the panel is flat enough, you can ask a professional painter to paint the area. But if you're on a tight budget, you can paint the area yourself.
