Starting your vehicle back in the 1900's
You'd need a hand crank, a lot of upper body strength, and a short prayer if you wanted to start your engine back then. Hand cranking was the #1 injury risk during the early days of the automobile as a violent kickback from the crank could break your arm, or result in other grievous injuries.
As engines developed, their sizes grew and starting them via a manual hand crank would be impossible. This actually led to the creation of the word "cranky", and you'll surely be in a bad mood if you had to start your engine that way.
Thankfully, Cadillac's founder, Henry Leland, who was a leading pioneer in electric devices during his day, was able to work closely with Charles Kettering, the inventor of the electric starter. Soon enough, the electric self starter became a standard on vehicles and we were finally able to do away with the manual hand crank.
The modern electric starter
You'll still be cranky if your car failed to start right away, but you can console yourself soon after since all you'll need to do would be to jumpstart your vehicle or replace a faulty starter.
