DIY Repair: Cigarette Lighter Socket
If you're thinking that cigarette lighters are just for literally lighting up your cigarette, then you clearly haven't explored the
magic that your car has to offer. The cigarette lighter socket is a good source of power for handy gadgets, such GPS, radar, and mobile phone charger. If this got busted because of constant use, then you don't have to worry. Here's a guide to help you repair it right away.
Difficulty level: Moderate
What you'll need:
- Set of sockets
- Phillips screwdriver
Step 1: Take out the Phillips screws that are securing the ash tray to the socket if the lighter is in the ash tray. However, if it's in the socket itself, remove the screws on both sides.
Step 2: Using the screwdriver, remove the screws in the shift indicator and lift the plate up. Remember, you do not have to completely remove the socket to be able to reach the cigarette lighter.
Step 3: Lift up the shift indicator plate and take out the bolts at the bottom brace by using a socket. Remove the two bolts found at the rear bottom of the console compartment using a socket as well.
Step 4: Pull out the emergency brake handle all the way up. Raise the socket just enough to gain access to the back of the lighter. Pull the two electrical connectors from the lighter.
Step 5: Put the pliers around the backside of the lighter under the socket and twist the lighter outer housing counterclockwise to unthread it. Take out the backside tube on the lighter and pull out the inner tube from the top of the socket.
Step 6: Thread the outer tube off of the new car lighter. With the primary power contact on the bottom of the tube, insert the inner tube housing right into the opening in the socket. Thread the outer tube with its lip facing the socket over the lighter from under the socket. With your hand, turn the outer tube clockwise until it's tight enough to hold the lighter securely to the socket.
Step 7: Set the main power wire, with the rubber covering on the center post, on the back of the lighter. Install the black ground wire to the post at the lighter's side.
Step 8: Mount the socket by putting the two bolts through the shift indicator opening and into the lower bracket. Tighten them with a socket.
Step 9: Install the two bolts at the rear compartment and tighten them using a socket. Put the shift indicator plate screws along both sides of the socket. Tighten with a screwdriver and you're done!
With these 9 steps, you're sure to repair the cigarette lighter socket in no time. Good luck!
