Spindle differs from original motor by Buck, June 18, 2012

First, Ford obviously didn't give a thought to anyone ever having to replace the wiper motor. A few minor changes here and there would have made the job a lot easier. It's almost like they designed things to make it extra difficult. Like I do with all repairs, I compared the old part and new one before proceeding. The differences were not apparent to the eye; I should have been more diligent. The spindle on the new motor was about 1/16" to 3/32" shorter. It was also slightly fatter than the original. This mean that I eventually had to take out the little metal collars that seat the wiper assemblies on the spindle and bore each one out to a bigger diameter and grind each one down to less height. What a colossal hassle! Finally, the notch at the end of the spindle was slightly different too though this didn't prevent the original clip from working okay. To top it off, I dropped a socket wrench into the quarter panel where it'll stay for the rest of the truck's life. The motor feels substantial and hopefully I'll never have to do this job on this truck again. Buyer beware! Compare your new "OEM" parts to the original down to the smallest detail!
