Car Maintenance: How to Install a Differential Mount

Replacing your Camaro's worn differential mount immediately makes your car go a long way. Why? Because if taken for granted, a broken differential mount can eventually get detached from the frame rails completely, bringing further trunk floor damages. So, when you start having that "springy" feeling when you accelerate, get under your vehicle and examine the differential mount carefully.

Follow these simple steps in changing your Camaro's differential mount:

Difficulty: Moderate

  • Camaro's manual
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Drip pan
  • Ratchet wrench (18mm)
  • Wrench (18mm)
  • Deep socket (15mm)
  • Shallow sockets (15mm and 18mm)
  • Hacksaw

Step 1: Use a floor jack to lift your car and secure it with jack stands.

Step 2: Locate the chassis tunnel brace and remove them. To find it faster, look for 15mm bolts, or refer to your car's repair manual.

Step 3: Unbolt the rear valence to gain access to the rubber exhaust muffler hangers. You'll find two rubber hangers at the mufflers and two below the differential. Detach all four rubber hangers that hold the rear side of the exhaust system in place.

Step 4: Use a 15mm socket to remove the exhaust system from the header. The exhaust can drop straight down with the clamping sleeves sliding over the tube. With the exhaust system completely detached, you can now set it aside.

Step 5: Use a wrench of 18mm in size, and socket to remove the upper control arm, the trailing arm, and the tie rod to the upright bolt on the driver's side suspension only. Be careful not to disconnect the assembly yet since dropping it can cause damage to the brake line.

Step 6: Get a drip pan and place it under the differential mount. Then, drain the differential using a 3/8" ratchet wrench. Jack the differential and unscrew the three 18mm differential bolts mounting it.

Step 7: Unplug the vent hose from the top of the differential and remove the driveshaft flange from the driveshaft. Then, take out the half shaft from the driver's side and the passenger shaft from its retention ring. Remove the differential and place it on the ground.

Step 8: To change the bushings, use a hacksaw to cut out and remove the old bushings. Install the new bushings with white lithium grease. Make sure that you hit square to the bushing when you pound it lightly using a rubber mallet.

Step 9: After installing the bushing, repeat the steps with the aluminum inserts. Replace the differential and don't forget to fill the differential case with fluid.
