Door Molding: A Wide Variety of Options

When parking in malls or groceries, there's always the chance that some careless driver would park beside your vehicle and nick your door as he gets out of his car. Of course, there's nothing you can do about it once that's done. However, you can prevent this from happening again. While you can't regulate the carelessness of other people, what you can do is to equip your car with door molding.

Door Molding: A Stylish Way to Protect Your Vehicle

There are a lot of additions and modifications that you can apply on your car to protect it from damage. But one of the most basic and most simple things that you can do is to equip your ride with door molding. With the protection provided by door molding, you wouldn't have to worry about the side of your vehicle getting nicked, scratched, or scraped as you leave your ride parked in a mall or a grocery.

Door molding isn't merely a means to guard your car though. It can also be used to jazz up your ride's looks. Door molding comes in hundreds of colors, shapes, and sizes-you definitely have a lot to choose from if you wish to stylize and personalize your vehicle.

Choosing Door Molding For Your Car

Well, there no such thing as perfect door molding if your priority is to personalize your car. Go with what you think looks good. Again, you have a wide variety of options. You can find molding in different colors. Black, silver, and white are some of the most popular colors for door molding. Door molding can also be composed by a variety of materials. Vinyl and plastic door molding are the most common ones on the market. There are steel and aluminum variants too, although their installation requires more effort as you'd have to weld them.

If you're looking for nothing stylish in particular, go for the peel and stick door molding. Peel and stick door molding is very low-cost; you also won't have a hard time in installing them even if you're not a seasoned DIYer.

How to Install a New Door Molding

Door molding is yet another aspect of an automobile that you can style or customize according to your preference. Door molding comes in numerous shapes and sizes, literally giving you hundreds of ways to add a personal touch to your car. If you want to install a new door molding because you don't like your old one (or if it's already worn-out), you can easily do that with the help of our installation guide.

Difficulty: Easy

  • Heat gun/hair dryer
  • Plastic putty knife
  • Eraser wheel drill
  • Masking tape
  • Box cutter/utility knife
  • Rubber roller

Step 1: Park your car in a level surface. Choose to work in an area that's warm as this would make the removal of the old door molding an easier process.

Step 2: Start at one end of the molding and use the heat gun or hair dryer on it. Gradually move from that point to the other end. When using a heat gun though, make sure that it's at the lowest setting so that it doesn't damage your car's paint.

Step 3: Grab your plastic putty knife and start prying the door molding away from the body. Pull off the entire molding once that's doable with your hands.

Step 4: Take your eraser wheel drill and put it at the lowest setting. Strictly follow that as going beyond that setting could cause damage to your car. Once the drill is all set, apply it on the leftover adhesive. Make sure to get them all.

Step 5: After removing the leftover adhesive, you can now apply your new door molding. Start by straightening the molding.

Step 6: Position the new door molding on the side of your car. Don't take off the liner tape from the its back just yet though. Use masking tape to hold the molding in place for the mean time. By doing this initially, you can easily adjust the molding to its correct position.

Step 7: If you don't want molding in certain areas of the vehicle, you can remove them by using a box cutter or a utility knife. Be careful when doing that though.

Step 8: Take off the masking tape around the door molding once you're satisfied with its position. You can now remove the liner tape from the back of the molding to keep it in place. Press each area of the molding afterwards. You can also use a rubber roller for that purpose.
