Things to Consider When Purchasing a Door Skin for Your Ride

Much like any part of your vehicle's exterior, the door skin can get dents and paint chips, making it look unsightly. Road mishaps can also totally wreck the door skin. If any of these happens to you and you're now in need of a replacement, there are some things to keep in mind so you'll get the best value for your money.

Types of door skin

  • Stainless steel

Door skins made of this material are perfect for vehicles with steel body panels. Many stainless steel door skins are primer coated to prevent rust and to make painting the skin's surface easy, especially for DIYers. Door skins that have gone through salt-spray test are great buys because of their resistance to corrosion. There are also stainless steel door skins with holes for door handle and side molding and provisions for belt and sash molding, making it easy for you to install the door handle and fit in the molding just in case you'll decide to outfit your ride with these add-ons.

  • Fabric

When looking for fabric door skins for your soft top, make sure you'll get those made from high-grade, durable fabrics that can resist stretching and fading. For easy installation, you can go for units that come with hook and loop fasteners. Make sure also that the window material used is approved by the Department of Transportation. To achieve good looks, purchase a fabric door skin that matches your soft top's appearance.

Warranty coverage

This is a guarantee that the automotive product you'll get is free from manufacturing and material defects, so the longer the warranty coverage, the better.

If you will look through an online catalog to search for a door skin that will fit your ride and your needs, among the brands you'll see are Smittybilt, AutoTrust Gold, Bestop, Replacement, and Rugged Ridge. You can check some forums, review sites, and blogs to know which among these brands are reliable enough when it comes to automotive door skins. You can also visit the website of each brand to know if a particular company can be trusted or not.

Easy, No-Weld Door Skin Fix

A dented car door is not a pretty sight. But if you do not have the time and resources to replace your entire door, you can use a new door skin to revive it. Forget about welding! Automotive adhesives alone can do the job right, even better. So put your DIYer hat on and let's start this easy no-weld door skin replacement.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools that you'll need:

  • Safety glasses and gloves
  • Torch
  • Special drill bit or resistance spot welder
  • Gas duster or compressed air
  • Corrosion primer
  • Epoxy primer
  • Hammer and chisel
  • Door skin kit

Step 1: Detach the dented door from your car. Using your tools, carefully remove the inner door panel, window glass, side mirror, door lock, and handle. Keep them for reassembly later.

Step 2: Wear safety glasses and gloves then grind off the edges of the door skin all the way around. Using a torch, loosen the brazed joints at the top corners of the window opening and at the crease above the door. Drill the spot welds using a special drill bit or a resistance spot welder to keep the frame undamaged.

Step 3: Pry the skin off the door. Clean the inside part of the door with compressed air. Next, clean the doorframe.

Step 4: Coat the door frame with corrosion primer. This will prevent it from rusting. Now, set up the new door skin. Spray epoxy primer on both sides of the door frame and the door skin before putting them together.

Step 5: Install a panel stiffening material or automotive adhesive to the inside of the door skin. Some door skin kits include this.

Step 6: Using a door crimping tool, hem the tab around the door frame. This will keep the door flat.

Step 7: Mount the new door skin to the frame. Refinish both the door's interior and exterior. Reassemble door.

Through this easy and cheap auto repair, you can give your car a favor. In an hour or so, your car will be back to its original beauty by just spoiling it a bit with a new door skin.
