Baby Benz, the compact C280 automobile belongs to the C-class group of the Mercedes Benz. This class may be nicknamed
baby, but its unique line-up of multi-valve engines makes it a giant in the auto market. In fact, the C280 is at the top of the C-class, which boasts of unwavering sportiness and powerful design even to date.
1993: Fall of 190, rise of C280
With the decline of the 190 auto models, Mercedes Benz introduced a new breed of compact cars that stood out among the sedan market with its distinct features that combined luxury with performance. Named as the C-class, this new breed is the only Mercedes with a complete lineup of multi-valve engines that include C180, C200, C220 (soon replaced by C230), and the C280. Among the series, the Mercedes Benz C280 is at the top of the range boasting 190hp/142kW with its four-cylinder S6 engine.
1995: An optional Electronic Traction System
Two years after it was first introduced, the C280 together with the other C-classes came with an optional Electronic Traction System (ETS), which supplemented the brakes especially in slippery roads. Aside from the ETS, the Acceleration Slip Control was also introduced. This control system employed a throttle control with an additional switch located on the dashboard.
1998: From S6 to V6
As the Mercedes Benz C280 transitioned to the second generation, the auto’s engine was changed from the S6 to V6, which reduced the car’s emissions while improving its fuel consumption. Not only that, the change of engine also brought an increase in power about 4PS with 3kW and 4hp.
2001: A sportier sedan
By the start of the second generation, the classy C280 received a facelift with a steeper front end and a shorter rear end. This revamp gave the sedan a sportier look without sacrificing the Mercedes’ luxurious appeal.
2004: Interior revamp
A few years later, the compact car went an interior styling change with a new displayed set of analogue gauges while its center console and audio systems were also revised. Additionally, the interior facelift came with an iPod connection kit and an optional Bluetooth phone system. The C280 did not only receive changes aesthetically, but also a power up engine-wise with an increase by as much as 24%. This change also decreased emission while increasing fuel economy.
2006: Transmission and engine upgrade
By 2006, the compact auto gained an L7 transmission change. A year later, the C280 4MATIC was introduced with an engine in 7-speed automatic with 7G-TRONIC paddle shifter. This engine change brought about an increase in power with 231 PS of 170 kW and 228hp.
