Keep Your Radiator in Place with a Radiator Mount Bracket

An overheating vehicle isn't something that we'd wish to experience on a daily basis. Unfortunately, that could happen to you if your radiator mount brackets are broken. Even a fully functional radiator will not work properly if the mounts that are holding it are bent or misaligned. These small brackets help keep the radiator level and in place, so you'll have to replace them once they give out to avoid any overheating problems. Getting replacement brackets isn't hard. These parts are readily available online and it should only take a few minutes of research to get the right ones for your car.

One-piece and two-piece mount brackets

The most common radiator mount brackets come as either one-piece or two-piece solutions. As their names suggest, a one-piece mount bracket is made up of a single item while two-piece designs come in pairs. You could easily check your car's current radiator mount bracket to see which type you have.

Match your car's make and model

As with any car part, you'll need to match them with your vehicle's make and model for an exact fit. The easiest way to do this is to get a replacement OEM part. These aftermarket components are designed exactly for a specific type of vehicle to ensure proper fit. You can also get a universal radiator mounting kit, but you might have to make some modifications to your vehicle. These universal kits may be cheaper, but the added cost of the modifications may end up costing you more.

Always get a complete kit

You'll also want to have all the necessary items that are needed when installing a radiator mount bracket. You can save time and money by getting a complete kit instead. Prices for radiator mount brackets vary depending on the size of the brackets. Smaller ones can cost as little as $5 per piece, but larger ones can go as high as $50 to $100.

Replace Your Radiator Mount Bracket

One of the most common problems that most of us experience with an older vehicle is an overheating engine. Upon checking under your hood, you'll probably see that your radiator is already worn out and would need to be replaced. Don't just change the radiator; you'll need to change your radiator mounting brackets as well. These components help stabilize the radiator and keep your vehicle from overheating. Even a perfectly functioning radiator could underperform just because of a faulty mounting bracket. You'll just need a couple of basic tools to take out your radiator mounting brackets, so it's best that you do it yourself rather than hiring a mechanic to help you out.

Difficulty level: Moderate

What you'll need

  • Ratchet and socket set
  • Radiator mount bracket

Quick Tip

Make sure that you allow your vehicle to completely cool down before you begin working on your radiator. This component can get really hot so we recommend that you let it cool down before you begin.

Two-piece supports

Step 1: There should be two radiator support bolts on either side of the radiator. Begin by locating the left radiator support bolt on the car frame and loosen it by turning the bolt counterclockwise. Pull out the bolt and the washer underneath so you can take out the radiator mount.

Step 2: Next, you'll need to pull out the mount bracket out from the engine compartment and away from the plastic cover.

Step 3: Repeat the same steps above and remove the radiator support bolt on the right.

Step 4: Replacing the radiator mount bracket is simply a reverse of the process. Slide a radiator mount bracket under the plastic frame, align the bolts properly, and tighten them adequately. Repeat the same step on the other side of the radiator and you're done.

One-piece support

Step 1: If the radiator mount bracket is set in the center, then you have a one-piece support. It should look like an upside down "U" that snaps into place to hold the radiator.

Step 2: Loosen the bolts on each side of the mount using a wrench or socket.

Step 3: Take out the bolts and you should be able to lift the mount bracket up and off the radiator. You'll need to slide the bracket toward the front then up in order to take it out.

Step 4: Take a new mount bracket and snap it into place.

Step 5: Place the bolts back into place and tighten them to finish installing your new mount bracket.
