These innovations are so remarkable and revolutionizing, one has to wonder why nobody thought of them before.Renault Voiturette Type B: The first sedan
Cars were coming of age in the latter part of the 19th century. In 1899 Renault added a twist on the cars by putting two doors, and a roof on the Type B. This might not sound much, but the Type B was, by definition, the first ever sedan in the world. Without this, who knows how long it would take before somebody thought of putting a roof on cars.Renault 8: Discs an all fours
Fast forward to 1962, Renault introduced the elegant R8 which was mostly based on the successful Renault Dauphine. The major innovation of the R8 was the installation of disc brakes on all four wheels for sedans. 1983 saw the company do a take on luxury cars with the Renault 25. What set the 25 apart first was the spacious cabin area for all passengers. The greatest innovation on this luxury car was electronics that made driving easier and more comfortable. Gadgets included an electronic fuel gauge, outside temperature display, express driver power window, and remote controlled stereo. The big and spacious design of the 1984 Renault Espace allowed families to enjoy being in a car. It was virtually a living room on wheels. Holding a capacity of p to seven passengers, with foldable rear seats, the car could definitely carry a heavy load. These features gave the Espace the title of the
world's first real MPV.
The story of Renault has always been linked with motorsport history. Again and again, the company takes every opportunity on the racetrack to expose the brand, improve its vehicles, and beat its competitors to be a serious contender in the car industry. The early days
Louis Renault, the founder of the company, quickly recognized the benefits motorsports. With his brothers, Marcel and Ferdinand, Renault cars were winning numerous city-to-city races. The first trophy came during the 1899 Paris to Trouville event. This was followed by other events during the early 20th century such as Paris-Bordeux, Paris-Berlin, and Paris-Vienna.
Sadly, Marcel Renault died in a car accident on the 1903 Paris to Madrid Race. Despite the loss, the seeds of Renault racing were already planted, and the benefits were sowed. Throughout those years, Renault has enjoyed the great marketing and advertising benefits of racing.Rally to victory
Things got dirty ? in a good way ? as the years passed. Since the 50s, Renault has participated in numerous rally events using a rally car variant of its current models. Until now, its cars are still among the well-known cars in the world of rally.
The 4CV had a great design ideal for rallies: a lightweight car with a rear-wheel drive system. This was soon copied by competitors because the success it had. The Alpine A110, a car that had numerous developments, was the first ever champion of the prestigious World Rally Championship (WRC). The R5, a hatchback with a powerful turbo engine, is remembered for introducing a new wave of rally cars that we still see in today's WRC events.Formula for success
In 2002, Renault established an F1 team that would compete for eight years. Success came in the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the team won consecutive drivers' and constructors' championships with world class driver Fernando Alonso. This team was not to be taken lightly.
Though the team has been absent for two years, Renault currently provides powerful and reliable engines for team Lotus, and Red Bull Racing. With Red Bull Racing, Renault repeated the feat of 2005 and 2006 by supplying an engine to win consecutive drivers' and constructors' titles.
