Roll Pan: Choosing the Right One for your Vehicle
There are many ways to improve the looks of your ride's rear end. One way is by using an accessory called a roll pan. Roll pans are intended to cover any unsightly portions on the rear end of a truck. With the right roll pan, you can give your truck a sleeker and more polished appearance.
Common materials used in roll pans
1.Fiberglass-Some of the earliest forms of roll pans were made of fiberglass. Fiberglass roll pans are lightweight and durable. The only downside is that they can be pretty tricky to install. To make installation easier, today's fiberglass roll pan now comes with all the mounting hardware needed to install this product.
2.Urethane-Urethane roll pans are generally rust-resistant, hardwearing, and removable. Because they don't corrode or dent easily, these roll pans are often regarded as a lasting investment.
3. ABS Plastic-Like their urethane counterparts, roll pans made of ABS plastic are known for their durability. But what really sets this roll pan apart from similar models is that it's also customizable. The only downside to this type of accessory is that it's also a bit difficult to mold against the vehicle's rear end.
4.Steel-Like fiberglass roll pans, steel roll pans have been around for some time. The obvious upside to this type of roll pan is that it's much stronger than its counterparts. Most models are also easily moldable against the vehicle body. However, unlike other roll pans, the steel roll pan requires welding during installation.
Additional buying tips
When picking out your new roll pan, we recommend choosing one that will offer your ride added style and maximum protection. For a custom look, steel or fiberglass roll pans are excellent choices. But for customizability, ABS plastic roll pans are your best bet.
The ABCs of Roll Pan Installation
A roll pan is a fiberglass, steel, or plastic panel that's used to smooth out a truck's rear bumper. This panel goes over the truck bumper, covering protrusions and giving the vehicle a sleeker appearance. Although earlier versions were a pain in the neck to install, today's roll pan is ergonomically designed for easy and quick installation. If you're up for the job, follow the instructions below on how to properly install your new roll pan.
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Things that you'll need:
- Roll pan
- Power Drill
- Drill Bit
- Duct tape
- Paint (optional)
Step 1: Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the bolts that hold the license plate in place. Take your license plate and set aside.
Step 2: Crawl under the truck, then locate the taillight wiring. Disconnect this particular wire.
Step 3: With the help of your wrench, remove the nuts that hold the rear bumper. Once the rear bumper is loose, pull it off completely.
Step 4: Slide the new roll pan onto the tailgate. Make sure that the roll pan is perfectly aligned with the tailgate.
Step 5: When you're sure that the roll pan is already in place, secure it by using duct tape.
Step 6: Reinstall the rear bumper just to check if the roll pan is in its right place. If necessary, adjust the placement of the roll pan. Once you know where the roll pan should go, remove the tailgate from your truck.
Step 7: Using the pre-drilled holes on the roll pan as a guide, drill screws along the top edge and the lower corners of the roll pan. Remove the roll pan and the screws.
Step 8: Screw the license plate onto the roll pan. Then, paint or customize the roll pan. Let the paint dry completely.
Step 9: Once the paint is dry, screw the roll pan into place. Make sure all of the connections are airtight.
