Here's a brief look at it's climb to the top:

Beginning with inventing and merging

In 1899, Howard Muzzy and Edward Lyon formed a company that created a special bearing metal called "Mogul." It also pioneered the die casting process that created bearings to suite its proper size and shape. In 1924, it merged with the Federal Bearings and Bushings to form the Federal-Mogul Corporation.

Continuing with innovating and acquiring

Throughout the years, Federal-Mogul weathered the Great Depression, World War II, and many other life-changing events by pioneering the production of different parts like motorboat propellers and NASA components. It also merged with other companies like leading European manufacturer Seal Technology Systems, as well as Cooper Industries (makers of the famous wiper blades.) It seems that Federal-Mogul has found a good strategy in continuing to invent new products while partnering with other companies. After all, this is how it became one of today's market leaders in automotive parts.
