Your car's suspension system is incomplete without coil springs. Made from spring steel with high yield strength, coil springs compress when your vehicle receives a heavy load, and they rebound to their former length once the load is removed. This coil spring is normally paired with your shock absorber, which is located in the middle of the spring; your car's shocks absorb the coil spring's stored torsion energy so that your car will not bump and sway too much when getting past road irregularities. As coil springs keep your car's stability when driving, it is imperative that you only have the best type. Let us look at what Moog coil springs can offer.

Features

  • Constant-rate springs
  • Sold in set of two
  • Made from heat-treated alloy steel for durability
  • Coated with enamel for corrosion resistance
  • With tubes covered with urethane to prevent metal-to-metal clash
  • With square and tangential ends for better transferring of force and stability
  • Original equipment replacement
  • With spring load of about 2,000 pounds
  • With spring rate between 300 and 775 pounds per inch

We installed and tested this component on an Acura MDX and a Honda Odyssey, and here is what we have to say:

Thumbs up

  • After installing the new coil springs on the MDX, we saw that the distance between the top of the front tires and the bottom of the fenders was bigger. Before, we could not even put three fingers in that space, but after the installation, we were able to insert a hand with more space left, which meant that ride height increased by up to five inches.
  • After we installed a set of coil springs on the rear of the Odyssey, the vehicle looked level. The rear of the car was actually tipping backward or sagging prior to the installation, but the front and rear parts became parallel to the ground once the new coil springs were in place.
  • When driving both vehicles for half an hour, we were able to experience a better ride handling. The MDX and the Odyssey did not have much body roll when cornering, which was a problem before the installation because both vehicles had had their old coil springs for three years.

Thumbs down

  • The product did not come with detailed installation instructions. We actually took more than 45 minutes in installing a pair of coil springs for each of the vehicles.
  • Although the product has a cheaper price than other brands, it does not come with a specific warranty offer.

The verdict

Based from our tests using the MDX and the Odyssey, Moog coil springs were able to deliver in terms of improving the handling and height of the cars. However, we are also aware of reports that this product wears considerably fast, with some users saying that the coil springs deteriorated after only two years. Still, your experience will be the only way to verify the results of our tests and those online claims.
