Driving a Saturn requires its driver to be aware of everything around him and the mirrors of a car help him do just that. Before changing lanes or before backing up into a road, drivers must look at their car mirrors to make sure that no pedestrian, automobile, or any other obstacle is in the way. There are two main types of mirrors installed in every brand new Saturn. The side mirrors let the driver view both sides of the car in the rear. They are attached to both car doors on the front. The rear-view mirror allows the driver to have a view directly behind the rear of the Saturn and is attached to the top of the windshield.

FAQ

Ask APW
  • Answer: Some side mirrors make use of a convex lens which gives drivers a good view of the road on both sides by minifying the images reflected on the surface. The unfortunate side effect of this minifying is that it also manages to make objects appear farther than they actually are. Warnings are usually etched onto the convex side mirrors of cars saying "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear". The U.S. Federal Safety Motor Vehicle Standard regulates the amount of curvature these mirrors may have, allowing only a curvature radius between 889 mm and 1651 mm.
  • Answer: Adjusting the rear-view mirror and side mirrors is a tricky issue and everybody has their own idea on how to best adjust their mirrors. Most side mirrors are adjusted in a way that reflects a rather large portion of the vehicles rear. The problem with this configuration is that it overlaps the rear-view mirror's field of vision, making it somewhat redundant. This also creates a blind spot just to the side of the vehicle. The reflection on the side mirrors should just barely overlap that of the rearview mirror. With such configuration, the reflection of a car changing lanes on the rear will appear on the side mirrors as soon as it moves out of the rear-view mirrors visual range. This configuration will take some getting used to for many, but the increase in road awareness may prove to be worthwhile.
  • Answer: Most cars are usually equipped with side mirrors and a rear-view mirror that allows drivers to see what is going on behind them. Vanity mirrors are also included in the front passenger seat of some Saturns and are tucked neatly into the sun visor.
