Looking to purchase Nissan Maxima Oxygen Sensor with a specific budget in mind? Browse products by price:
The Nissan Maxima is able to give you a smooth ride, clean emissions, and good gas mileage--all thanks in no small part to its oxygen sensor. This component, an essential part of your Nissan Maxima's emissions system, detects the amount of unburned combustibles in the exhaust flow. This helps your vehicle's onboard computer determine the ideal air-to-fuel ratio at any given moment. A worn-out oxygen sensor will lead to very rough idling, engine misfires, increased emissions, overheating, and a drop in fuel economy. Avoid all these problems (and a trip to the mechanic) by replacing your Nissan Maxima's oxygen sensor at the first sign of trouble.

FAQ

Ask APW
  • Answer: The number of sensors varies depending on the year the Nissan Maxima was made. Earlier models, like the 1989 Nissan Maxima, use only one O2 sensor. Later models use two or more sensors. The 2000 Nissan Maxima has an O2 sensor before the catalytic converter and another sensor after it. The 1996 Nissan Maxima has three sensors, with two in the front pipe below the manifold flanges and a third positioned after the catalytic converter.
  • Answer: The number of wires depends on the type of O2 sensor being used. Heated oxygen sensors typically have 3-5 wires while unheated sensors only have one or two wires. Heated sensors need more wires for the heater circuit. It is usually recommended that a replacement oxygen sensor should be of the same type and have the same number of wires as the original part.
  • Answer: Oxygen sensors need to reach a certain temperature (around 600-650 degrees Fahrenheit) in order to start functioning. Heated O2 sensors have an internal heater circuit that allows them to quickly reach that temperature. Unheated sensors, however, have a slower response time since they rely on heat from the exhaust to warm them up first. Because of the delay, the Nissan Maxima will end up wasting some fuel and have higher emissions. Heated oxygen sensors also last longer. Unheated sensors are expected to last for around 30,000 to 50,000 miles while heated sensors can last for around 100,000 miles. Because of these advantages, heated O2 sensors are generally more expensive.
  • Answer: Many experts recommend replacing an oxygen sensor every 100,000 miles. However, a sensor can go bad well before it reaches that point. Signs of this component failing include the "check engine" light coming on, black exhaust fumes (meaning higher emissions), the engine misfiring or pinging (caused by the poorly-timed ignition of combustion gases), and rough idling.
