"over all quality is very poor. would not buy again." posted by: dreamcar on July 13, 2014

"I am not picky and was replacing a very dented tailgate on an old truck. Tailgate was double boxed and showed no sign of damage on either box. Initially did not notice denting until I began to spray it. Top right side of TG was folded over - but will be covered by plastic protector so will not be seen when finished. Also noticed the left edge of TG was either misformed or bent in - but in much better shape than what I had. I was in a rush so accepted it for what it was and primered it. I believe damage was from factory." posted by: on June 12, 2014 view all 14 reviews

"Tailgate arrived in 3 bussiness days with standard shipping. Tailgate looks great, and instullation was easy, although, I had to remove the nylon covers, to reduce the diameter on the truck lock bolts, so the latch on the tailgate would accept them. The locking handle is of no practical use as even when locked you can use your fingers to open the tailgate. Where cable is attached to latch is easilly seen and can be reached with fingers to open tailgate. An additional piece of aluminum welded to cover this opening would be an easy fix during manufactoring. Would distroy finish to add aftermarket. Overall, looks great and with exception of lock I am very pleased with product." posted by: Gunny on April 28, 2012

Tailgates are doors that are attached to the back of your Ford F-150. They are hinged at the bottom so that they can be lowered, allowing you to load the bed of your vehicle with ease. They are available in a range of materials like high grade plastic, aluminum, and steel. These materials usually determine their weight, durability and price. Mesh tailgates are also available and claim to be aerodynamic, reducing the drag on your moving pickup and improving your gas mileage in the long run. Tailgates don't come cheap unfortunately. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars for original and replacement parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask APW
  • How much do tailgates cost?
Answer: Unfortunately, tailgates are not some of the cheapest components available. Plastic tailgates will cost around $200 - $300 dollars while the more durable ones made from steel will set you back almost $500.
  • Is it difficult to install a new tailgate on an F-150?
Answer: Installing the tailgate is a rather straightforward process and isn't that much difficult to do. The tailgate has to be opened and propped up to a 45 degree angle before removing all the torx bolts and retaining cables on both sides. After removing all the necessary components and connectors, the old tailgate can now be removed from the truck. After that, you may have to transfer the cover plate, handle, locking mechanisms, bushings, and latches from the old tail gate to the new one. After putting in all the remaining components, the new tailgate can now be installed.
  • Should tailgates be up or should they be down when driving?
Answer: expect the moving air to exert a greater force if the plywood were to be held facing the fan rather than if it were held sideways, as if the plywood was slicing through the air. You'll be surprised to know that the opposite is true for pickup trucks and their tailgates. Rather than just blocking the air passing through the truck bed, the tailgate actually manages to create an air bubble called a locked vortex flow. The bubble makes the vehicle more aerodynamic. This fact has been proven by numerous automobile labs through a number of wind tunnel tests. So next time, do yourself a favor. Drive with the tailgate up.
