"At first glance the tailgate looks great. Fit and finish looked OEM....until the truck was actually used as a truck. The tailgate lacks the internal bracing that the OEM tailgate has to keep it from denting and bowing. The first time I noticed is after installation I was loading trash to haul to the dump. Upon stepping on the backside of the tailgate I noticed my foot pressed the backside steel in. I now realized why the tailgate is priced so low....its for looks not for function. The next load (400lb sport bike) rolling the bike over the tailgate left a nice permanent dent and slightly bowed it. As far as fit and appearance it looks great but after a couple of real uses this tailgate will be garbage." posted by: on January 13, 2014

"The metal is not as thick as the original and obviously not as heavy. It was delivered in great shape. The packaging was quite substantial. Overall appearance is impressive." posted by: Ben on November 20, 2013 view all 10 reviews

Tailgates are doors that are attached to the back of your Ford F-150. They are hinged at the bottom so that they can be lowered, allowing you to load the bed of your vehicle with ease. They are available in a range of materials like high grade plastic, aluminum, and steel. These materials usually determine their weight, durability and price. Mesh tailgates are also available and claim to be aerodynamic, reducing the drag on your moving pickup and improving your gas mileage in the long run. Tailgates don't come cheap unfortunately. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars for original and replacement parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask APW
  • How much do tailgates cost?
Answer: Unfortunately, tailgates are not some of the cheapest components available. Plastic tailgates will cost around $200 - $300 dollars while the more durable ones made from steel will set you back almost $500.
  • Is it difficult to install a new tailgate on an F-150?
Answer: Installing the tailgate is a rather straightforward process and isn't that much difficult to do. The tailgate has to be opened and propped up to a 45 degree angle before removing all the torx bolts and retaining cables on both sides. After removing all the necessary components and connectors, the old tailgate can now be removed from the truck. After that, you may have to transfer the cover plate, handle, locking mechanisms, bushings, and latches from the old tail gate to the new one. After putting in all the remaining components, the new tailgate can now be installed.
  • Should tailgates be up or should they be down when driving?
Answer: expect the moving air to exert a greater force if the plywood were to be held facing the fan rather than if it were held sideways, as if the plywood was slicing through the air. You'll be surprised to know that the opposite is true for pickup trucks and their tailgates. Rather than just blocking the air passing through the truck bed, the tailgate actually manages to create an air bubble called a locked vortex flow. The bubble makes the vehicle more aerodynamic. This fact has been proven by numerous automobile labs through a number of wind tunnel tests. So next time, do yourself a favor. Drive with the tailgate up.
