The ABCs of Installing a Short Shifter

There will come a time that you'll have to replace the original short shifter of your vehicle. Short shifters are replaced because of two reasons: they're damaged or they don't offer enough style. If you're not satisfied with your vehicle's short shifter, then there's no need for you to worry because it's relatively easy to install a new one. If you own a Honda or Acura vehicle, you can follow the instructions below if you want to install a new short shifter.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools needed:

  • 12mm socket
  • 12mm box wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Vice grip
  • 8mm punch
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and Flathead)
  • Lubricant
  • New short shifter
  • New shift knob (optional)

Step 1: Using a screwdriver, unfasten the screws that hold the shift knob and center console in place.

Step 2: Remove the center console.

Step 3: Peel off the weather seal after the weather console has been removed.

Step 4: Raise your vehicle using a floor jack and jack stands.

Step 5: Go underneath the vehicle, and start removing the bolts of the shifter mount using a 12mm socket.

Step 6: Using a 12mm box wrench, remove the bolts that hold the front of the shifter rod.

Step 7: Detach the shift linkage from your vehicle.

Step 8: Remove the bolt that holds the shifter to the shift rod.

Step 9: Use an 8mm punch to unfasten the small pin that holds the shift rod to the transmission system.

Step 10: Gently remove the pivot retainer.

Step 11: Apply lubricant on the short shifter before sliding it into the shifter hardware.

Step 12: Carefully install the new short shifter and hardware to the shift linkage.

Step 13: Put the new short shifter and linkage into your vehicle. Make sure that the linkage is connected to the output on the transmission. Then, attach the linkage to the bushing located at the side of the transmission.

Step 14: Attach the rear bushing to the chassis.

Step 15: Put the weather seal back in place.

Step 16: Reinstall the center console and the shift knob. You can also install a new shift knob if you want.

Step 17: Start your vehicle's engine to test how the newly installed short shifter feels.
