Mechanic said that I need a new alternator. I limped it home and then looked at the alternator and noticed the regulator itself could removed with ony two screws. The regulator and brushes are all one unit. The unit had over 200,000 miles and the brushes were shot (No contact) . I saved HUNDREDS with this repair !

The regulator often fails simply because the carbon brushes wear down and can't reach the slip rings anymore. It's easy to replace, usually, depending on the alternator mounting, in my Mercedes 190E 2.6, it was. It's much easier and cheaper than replacing the whole alternator, but if your bearings or slip rings themselves are worn, then get a whole new alternator, as it comes with a new regulator. But for $40 you can extend the life of your alternator if it stops charging and the bearings are still holding in there. The charging indicator lamp was not working, I found out after I replaced this part, and it actually stops the alternator from charging when it's out. So check this too.
