Exact Replacement by fishingdad, October 8, 2014

This is an exact fit for a 97 Ford Explorer XLT. I was concerned that the replacement mirror assembly had a puddle lamp when the original did not, but the connector is the same and it plugged right in. The mirror controls work properly. To avoid dropping nuts inside the door, use a bit of caulk on the socket so the nut sticks both in removing and installing. Roll down the window so you can hold the old mirror as you take it off and put the new one in. I was able to just pull back the top corner of the door panel and didnt have to pull off the whole thing.

I knew getting the door panel off and removing the bolts on the broken mirror without dropping them in to the door frame would be a challenge. I got through that ok and was excited to finally plug it in. Then I tried to plug the new mirror in to the existing source plug in the door that sends the signals to adjust the mirror and power the entry light. The new plug wouldn t connect with the existing plug. So I had to cut it off and replace it with the connector plug off my old broken mirror. It was only 5 wires but it was 40 minutes of work I wasn t planning for plus the aggravation of finding electrical tape and wire strippers I never use.
