Buying the Right Tailgate Light Kit for Your Truck in Three Easy Steps

Finding the best-fitting tailgate light is like finding your way out of a labyrinth. You can get lost and confused because of the many different tail light options that you have. In order for you to arrive at the right decision, you have to narrow down your choices; eliminate the tail light kits that seem to be incompatible with your car. There are three simple steps that can lead you to a very sound buying decision. Read on to find out.

  1. Be familiar with how the tailgate lights work in your car. Why is this important? If you're aware of the wire connectors, light functions, and tailgate measurements, you'll know if a particular tailgate light assembly can possibly work in your car. However, you don't have to be as good as an expert technician to know all these electronic mechanisms. The task is as simple as counting how many wires are there in the bumper adapter harness. Most cars have four electric cables, and each wire corresponds with one of the four primary tail light functions namely, stop, park, turn left, and turn right. However some cars have six, which includes emergency hazard and reverse lights. Knowing your truck's tech specs is the first step that you have to accomplish.
  2. Know what features to look for in a quality tailgate light kit. Perhaps, most tailgate lights perform the same function, but not all exhibit features of a high-quality tailgate. Quality depends on several factors such as materials used in each component of the tailgate light kit. The major component,of course, is the light bar. An excellent tailgate light bar cover should be made from any of the following: glass, resin, or plastic. These materials are proven to be tough against vibration, which is heavy around the bumper area. The light's wire connectors must be well-coated with high-grade rubber to keep the copper wires from getting wet.
  3. Buy only genuine products. Searching for trusted and genuine auto parts store is the greatest challenge for you. Nowadays, there are so many bogus sellers, especially on the Internet. Buying online requires more caution because you can't see nor hold the actual component. That's why it's advisable to buy car parts from only trusted brands and products that are backed by warranty. If in case you purchased a damaged part, you can have it replaced for free.

DIY Car Enhancement: Installing a Tailgate Light Kit

There is a wide selection of tailgate light kits available in the market today, and LED tailgate bars are one of the most popular choices among car owners. Stylish, energy efficient, and functional are just some of their notable benefits and advantages. In addition to that, these light kits are very easy to install. If you want to add new LED tailgate lights in your car, here are the things that you need to do.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Prepare these tools:

  • Rag
  • Soapy water
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Adhesive

Pre-installation procedure:

Clean the tailgate area of your car first. Since this region is overly exposed, dirt, mud, and sand particles accumulate here. Mounting the tailgate lights requires the use of potent adhesives. However, it won't work if the surfaces around the tailgate are full of dirt. Use a clean rag and soapy water to dissolve the hardened soil around this section of the vehicle.

Step 1: Measure the area where you will be installing the new LED tailgate lighting fixture. Create markings that will serve as your guide.

Step 2: Find the wiring adapter or connector underneath the car's bumper. Pull the wires until the adapter reaches the middle of the bumper.

Step 3: Lay the flexible strips on the spot on the tailgate where you're planning to install the LED lights. Use the markings that you've made as a reference. As much as possible, place the strips close to the wires. The strips should be properly laid in a straight line.

Step 4: Apply the LED bar strips. Keep the strips straight and aligned while mounting them. Remember that the strips' adhesive can be applied only once so you have to make sure that you're doing the application right at the first time.

Step 5: Make sure that the LED bars don't fall off. There may be several screws that you need to use to keep the bars stuck firmly in place. If none, you might need to apply additional adhesive to the bar strips. Wait for a few minutes to let the adhesive dry completely.

Step 6: Gather the LED bars' wires and connect them to the taillight wiring adapter. Usually, cars have four pin connectors. Each wire has a unique color. Splice the wire endings and connect the wires that are of same color. Wrap electrical tape around the wire connections.

Step 7: Test the LED bars if they are working. Try pressing on the brake pedal, turning the park lights on, and activating turn signals and see if the LED tailgate lights are keeping up. If yes, you succeeded in installing a new tailgate light kit in your car.
