Timing Belt Kit: How to Install

Timing belts need to be replaced approximately every 60,000 miles. Difficulty in starting the engine, rough idling, backfiring, excessive vibrations, and squealing sounds are signs of timing belt failure. A worn timing belt will also present signs of cracking and fraying, so you need to have it replaced as soon as possible. Below are the tools you'll need and the steps to follow when replacing the timing belt:

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools that you'll need:

  1. Screwdrivers
  2. Combination wrenches
  3. Socket set
  4. Three-jaw gear puller
  5. Antifreeze
  6. Jack
  7. Jack stands
  8. Torque wrench
  9. Drain pan

Step 1: For your safety, jack up your car and use jack stands to ensure it is well supported during the removal and replacement process.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery cable and remove the distributor cap. Check if the transmission is in neutral.

Step 3: Rotate the engine to top dead center (TDC). This is marked by an "o" on the timing scale. Use a wrench on the crankshaft bolt to do this.

Step 4: Remove the spark plugs and all plastic shields underneath your engine.

Step 5: Remove the radiator, engine drive belts, cap and rotor, and the water pump pulley.

Step 6: Remove the bolts and screws on the timing cover and lift it off the engine.

Step 7: Check if the crank and camshaft timing marks are properly aligned. Check also the area surrounding the belt if there are signs of leakage. Ensure there are no leaks before installing the new timing belt.

Step 8: Release the timing belt tensioner and its mounting bolts a bit but do not remove them completely.

Step 9: After loosening the tensioner, slide off the old timing belt.

Step 10: Check again if the engine is at TDC for easier confirmation of timing marks.

Step 11: Slide in the new timing belt and adjust it to the correct tension.

Step 12: Verify if the timing marks on the accessory sprockets, cam, and crank are still in correct alignment.

Step 13: Reinstall the timing cover and all the components that were removed upon installation. Tighten all bolts and screws.

Step 14: Reconnect the battery cable and start the engine to check the operation of your new timing belt.

Timing belt installation takes around three to four hours. It might take a little longer for a beginner.
