Transmission Control Module Products

Through the years, automobile designs have evolved to provide a safer and more convenient driving experience for everyone. One important upgrade is the availability of automatic transmission that allows automatic adjustment of gear ratios as the vehicle moves. Through this, drivers no longer need to adjust gears manually, allowing them to drive with more comfort and ease. The transmission control module is necessary to control the gear shifting process in vehicles with automatic transmission. Located at the back part of the engine, this unit sends the necessary signals so the transmission system can match the needed timing and method of the gear changes. It is the heart of the automatic transmission; without it, the vehicle won't be able to effectively adjust to various driving conditions. It also helps regulate fuel efficiency and power while storing information about the transmission system in its memory. Once you have a faulty transmission control module, acceleration and performance of the auto are greatly affected; the car may not increase its speed even if you hit the gas pedal and may respond poorly when you shift the gear into drive. The typical module has various sensors that allow it to perform its task; these are vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors. Other components include a kick down switch, brake light switch, traction control system, set of switches, and cruise control module.Anytime you need a replacement, make sure you order it from Auto Parts Warehouse to get the best value for your money. Dos and Don'ts When Buying a Transmission Control Module

A faulty transmission control module can be a really tough problem. Imagine yourself driving down the highway, and all of a sudden your car couldn't shift into a higher gear. That's pretty dangerous, right? You have to stall on the side for a moment, or endure a sluggish roll home. Read this guide to know the dos and don'ts when finding a replacement before the problem gets worse.

  • Find a transmission control module that's compatible to your vehicle. Aftermarket manufacturers of TCMs specify the car make that works well with their devices, so you have to check that one.
  • Select a transmission control module that's already configured and ready to use because tuning can be difficult and time-consuming. However, if you like to input your specific parameters like RPM and speed, then a module that's programmable and user-friendly is the best one for you. Some devices even have data logging and fault diagnosis. These data are very handy especially if you need to repair your car.
  • If you want to upgrade to a better module, make sure that the cables on your vehicle are fit with the TCM. Otherwise, you may have to purchase cables that are sold separately.
  • Choose a TCM that has shock resistant and waterproof housing. It helps to maintain your module in good condition for a long period of time.
  • Look for a TCM that comes with warranty. Remember that it contains electronic parts, and it can wear out easily if not maintained properly.

  • DO NOT rebuild an already worn-out or broken TCM if you have no experience with the electronic parts. You will only risk the other parts connected to it, and endanger yourself.
  • DO NOT purchase a transmission control module from a brand that you don't know. It's better to check their website first, or ask from people who might know any information.

Achieve Seamless Shifting by Replacing Your Transmission Control Module

You won't really know the exact time to replace your car's transmission module. Symptoms like gear change failure or clutch slips will eventually happen. With the right set of tools, you can replace your car's transmission control module in your own garage. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you out.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools needed:

  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Screwdriver
  • Clean rag
  • New transmission control module

Note: The vehicle used in this installation is a 1991 Honda Accord.

Step 1: Make sure your car is parked on a safe location, and check if the hand brake is engaged.

Step 2: Go to the passenger side of your vehicle, and remove the cover above the transmission control module. To do this, pull the clips that hold the carpet in the passenger's footwell. Pull off the carpet afterwards until the metal floor of your car is already visible.

Step 3: Locate the kickplate?it's the part where passengers rest their feet. Remove the screws that hold it in place, and remove the plate as well. You will then see the transmission control module beside engine control module. Read the label of the TCM, and remove the nuts of the module using a 10mm socket.

Step 4: Detach the cables of the transmission control module, and remove the module from your car. Wipe the area clean to remove dust that has settled.

Step 5: Take your new transmission control module, and fit it in place. If it's good, then screw the mounting bolts, and tighten them to be sure. Reconnect all the cables firmly, and remove the obstructions to the wires.

Step 6: Replace the kickplate, and screw it in its previous position. Place the carpet back and attach the clips in their correct locations. The carpet has to snug perfectly with the floor.

Step 7: Pop your car's hood, and disconnect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes to reset the engine control unit. Attach it afterwards so you can start the car.

Step 8: Test drive your vehicle until you reach every gear level. Do it also for reverse gear. Observe the sound while the car shifts. It can determine if the installation is done correctly.

Installation tip:

  • Program the transmission control module before you test drive your vehicle. It will help if you want to observe the performance while you test drive because the RPM and the speed are already predetermined to your desire.
