Tune-up Kits for Maximum Vehicle Performance

Does your car have low gas mileage? Is the exhaust from the tailpipe dirty? Are you having a hard time starting the engine? If you just answered yes to all of these questions, then what you need is a tune up. No need to bring your car to the auto repair shop only to get ripped off by the mechanics. There are plenty of tune up kits available that will allow you to accomplish this right in your garage.

Getting a kit that is right for your car

Tune up kits allow you to replace many of the components of an engine. They are usually supplied with parts like spark plugs, spark plug lines, distributor caps, air filters, oil filters and fuel filters. With some many components included, which of these kits is the right one for you?

Don't you worry much about it. Every tune up kit is made especially for a specific vehicle. The components will fit perfectly into your engine and operate smoothly. Just be sure to know your vehicle make, model, year and engine type when selecting a kit.

When selecting a tune-up kit, get one that includes as many components as possible. Think of a tune-up as an insurance against possible damage and malfunction. Better safe than sorry they say.

Fuel system tune-ups

The engines are not the only things that need a tune-up. Fuel system tune-up kits are also available and come with a set of chemical solutions meant to clean up your fuel system from the inside out. The tune-up process involves spraying chemicals onto the appropriate components and adding cleaning solutions to the fuel system. The whole thing usually takes less than an hour to complete.

Tune-up tool kits

If you lack the tools needed to perform a tune-up, there are various tool kits available that provide the necessary implements needed to get the job done. They remove the chore of hunting for each and every individual tool, making tune-up process a lot easier.

Engine tune-up kits don't have a high price attached to them, putting them comfortably within the budget of every car owner. Prices start around $70 and never go higher than $200. For the fuel system tune-up kits, prices will rarely go over $50.

Basic Car Tune Up Steps

If you want an effective yet inexpensive way of keeping you car off the shop, you can always do a tune up every two years or every 30,000 miles. For this task, you need to get a reliable tune up kit that will help you finish the task with utmost ease. When done regularly, a tune up can help make your engine perform better and last longer. It will also save you precious time and money because you won't have to do repairs often. Below are some basic steps on how to tune your car. Follow them to get started with your vehicle maintenance ASAP.

Difficulty Level: Difficult

Things to prepare:

  • Funnel
  • Hammer
  • Drain pan
  • Nut driver
  • Screwdrivers
  • Metric socket set
  • Open-end wrench
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Tune up kit
  • Feeler gauges
  • Motor oil

Step 1: To get started with your tune up, make sure your engine is cool before you do anything with your assembly. If it's still hot, you need to wait for about 30 minutes before proceeding. Once it has cooled down, start by unplugging your spark plugs wire from your spark plug.

Step 2: Next, change your oil by getting a drain pan and placing it below your engine. Open the drain plug to allow the oil to flow into the pan. Once you are done draining, replace the plug with a new one and refill the crankcase with oil as needed.

Step 3: After that, get your starter-clutch removal tool and carefully remove your starter clutch.

Step 4: After removing the starter clutch, you will see the flywheel. Remove this component by using the wheel puller. Put the puller on the two holes and slowly screw the shaft until it connects with your crankshaft. Next, use a wrench to turn the shaft and do this until the flywheel is loose. Once you've taken out the flywheel, remove its shear pin and set all your components aside.

Step 5: Next, remove the condenser's cover using a screwdriver. After that, turn the crankshaft to move the condenser and points away from each other. Then, remove the screws and spring holding the points in place to be able to remove it from the tray easily.

Step 6: Use the spring compressor from your tune up kit to compress the springs and remove all wires. After this, you can remove the compressor and install a new condenser and points.

Step 7: Next, remove the spark plug using a spark-plug wrench and replace it with a new one. Do not connect its wires until the end of your car tune up.

Step 8: After that, look for your air filter by removing the screw on the top part of your carburetor. Change both the filter and the screw of your carburetor.

Step 9: Reattach the parts you removed if they are still in good working condition and replace those that are in need of repairs. Before you take out your ride on major roads, start your car to test the engine.
