A Closer Look at the Volvo 240

During the 1970s, Volvo released the 200 series. It came out in two different models, the 240 and the 260. It was basically and updated version of the previous 140 series, but this time Volvo did a total 180 with the developments it had equipped the new model with. Out of all the Volvos manufactured in its earlier years, the Volvo 240 was probably the best-selling car in the market. It remained popular from 1975 to 1982.

Enhanced Engine

The main 180 that the 240 did on the 140 was the changes in the engine. The 200 series was offered with three different engines. The Volvo 240 has the red block, a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine. It was also offered in V6 engines. In fact, it was improved in a partnership among Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo, otherwise known as the PRV family wherein 240 diesel models are powered with diesel engines that were bought from Volkswagen.

Looking at the 240, you'd basically think that it was a family car. However, Volvo did a 180 on that impression as well. During the 1980s, the 240 became a successful competitor in motorsport. It was equipped with a 240 Turbo with a turbocharger that was larger and modified other performance components as well. Nonetheless, the 240 Turbo was a successful competitor in these races. With its cheap and robust body, it also became a very popular car in folk race competitions.

The Volvo 240 isn't only popular when it comes to races and its improved engine; it also became famous in film, having cameos in different movies. In 2004, it did a special appearance as one of the parked cars in the movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Not only that, but the model did a special animation version on The Simpsons TV series. Indeed, Volvo 240 was an all-around car. Not only did it turn a 180 on the other models, it also did a 180 on the driving experience of the car owners.
