Things to Consider When Buying a Wiring Harness
Just like computers and cellular phones, automobiles are getting more
high-tech with each passing year. You're always bound to find new technology in the latest car models. On top of the more traditional automotive gadgets and devices such as car stereos, power windows, and alarm systems, you'll find all sorts of advanced features such as intelligent global positioning systems and voice-activated controls. But regardless if an automotive gadget or device is traditional or advanced, it'll most likely need a wiring harness.
What is a Wiring Harness?
Basically, a wiring harness is an assembly of wires. Back when wiring harnesses weren't invented yet, the various wiring in your car were pretty much all over the place. That made the repairing and installing of new devices very complicated. Fortunately, that's not the case anymore as today's automotive wiring is much more organized thanks to wiring harnesses.
Types of Wiring Harness
If one of your car's gadgets or devices isn't working, one of the likely reasons for that is a malfunctioning or defective wire harness. That shouldn't be too big of a problem though since you can always replace a wire harness. But before you buy the first wire harness that you see, make sure it's the right kind first (it should pretty much resemble your old one). Normally, a wiring harness can be used for different gadgets or devices; however, there are those that serve specific purposes. Below are descriptions of the common types of wiring harnesses.
As the name implies, this is the most basic kind of wiring harnesses. Practically all modern vehicles use this for various gadgets and devices.
This is the reverse form of the standard wiring harness. It plugs in to the factory radio and is used to restore its functionality if it was damaged.
You'd need this to add aftermarket speakers to your car.
There are vehicles in which the stereo is very critical. When you take out the stereo in those vehicles, it would cause other gadgets and devices to malfunction. The stereo relocation harness allows you to transfer your stereo to a different location and to add a new one in its place without affecting the functionality of your other gadgets and devices.
This harness is for those who have advanced sound systems in their rides. You'd need this once you replace the stock stereo with a new one. The amplifier integrator harness lets you connect your amplifier to your new stereo.
An OEM Wiring Harness is the Way to Go
No matter what kind of harnesses you need, it's best that you buy an OEM replacement. An OEM wiring harness should have the same specifications as your old one, thus making the installation process easy as it should fit right in. They're also generally of high quality, which means that you won't have to replace it again anytime soon.

We'll guide you on how to go about it properly.
Difficulty Level: EasyTools:
- Wiring stripper
- Electrical tape
Step 1: Turn on the ignition without starting your pickup. Afterwards, move the column shifter downwards so that it won't get in your way. Do the same for the tilt column if you have one.
Step 2: Now, turn your attention to the dashboard. Remove the dashboard trim, which is held in place by a few clips. Do it carefully so that you won't cause damage to the trim.
Step 3: Once the dashboard trim is out of the way, you can proceed to removing the car stereo. Just like the trim, the stereo is secured by a few clips. Detach the wiring harness from the back of the stereo afterwards.
Step 4: Prepare your new wiring harness. You'll have to connect this to the harness on your new car stereo. As you probably noticed, both harnesses have wires that are of the same color. Grab your wire stripper and strip approximately 1/4-inch on each of the ends of both harnesses.
Step 5: Crimp the blue butt connectors to the end of each wire. Start pairing the wires of both harnesses according to their colors and connect them.
Step 6: Make sure that every wire is properly attached. You can use electrical tape for that purpose. After that, your new stereo should be ready to blast your favorite tunes!
