Aside from anti-freeze and oil, another liquid that is used to keep your engine cool is none other than water. But this auxiliary coolant does not reach the engine block without any help. The axle at the center of the water pump turns when the fan belt turns, and this movement of the axle turns the vanes, creating a centrifugal force that sucks water from the radiator. We tested this component on a 1995 Chrysler Saratoga and a 1994 Dodge Spirit, and here is what we have to say:
- When inspecting the component, we were glad that it looked indeed new. The housing of the pump was thick and solid, the shaft had the right length, and the bearing assembly looked dependable enough.
- Installing the component was not that difficult. We only had to remove the bolts securing the old unit, switch the old unit with the new one, and then refasten the bolts. The only challenging part of the task was ensuring that the gasket would seal perfectly. Other than that, the process was endurable.
- During the time we were running the Saratoga and the Spirit, we never heard any repetitive squeaking near the water pump of each vehicle. This meant that the seal was keeping the pressure inside the pump well. We had no leak, so that was good. The vehicles also did not show signs of overheating.
- The gasket that came with the unit provided only a weak seal of the water pump. Thus, to keep everything safe, we ended up using a silicone sealant. We had to apply the sealant before putting on the gasket, then we had to re-apply more sealant to perfect the sealing. The hours of waiting we had to endure for the sealant to dry was a definite inconvenience.

You only have to ensure that the seal is perfect, especially around the weep hole, in order to extend the unit's life for thousands of miles.
