FAQs—Acura Bumper Cover
- What's the difference between a bumper and a bumper cover?
A bumper is the part of your vehicle that protects its front or rear from collisions. It's a complicated piece of auto construction that's mounted deeply unto your Acura's front and back in order to protect what's under the hood and trunk of your vehicle. A bumper cover, on the other hand, is an extra layer of bumper you put there to protect your bumper itself from nicks and scratches or to reinforce it against impacts. It's essentially your bumper shield or your means of protecting your first line of protection.
- Aren't bumper covers ornamental or do they serve other purposes?
While there are a lot of customizers who buy bumper covers for the sake of making their car look better, these automotive accessories fulfill both ornamental and functional purposes. If you want to put a black plastic or fiberglass cover over your bumper to harmonize with your red car, then that's your prerogative. However, these bumper covers are a combination of form and function. It makes your Acura look like a showroom showcase or an impressive custom-built machine but at the same time you can reduce the damage your bumper is faced with throughout the daily grind of driving with a replaceable, cost-effective cover. It's an investment that gives you handsome returns in terms of upkeep.
- What are bumper covers made of?
Bumper covers are made from all sorts of materials. It can be made entirely of aluminum, which is easily recyclable and quite lightweight (thus your performance car has an extra edge in speed because it's not being weighed down up front or at the rear). Carbon fiber is also quite lightweight and durable against impacts (as though it's a combination of steel and aluminum) but costs quite a lot. Steel is heavy-duty and rugged without costing as much as carbon fiber. Fiberglass is a serviceably durable and cost-effective choice while poly resin plastic is among the most affordable options out there while still offering dependable toughness. Choose the cover that makes sense to you.
- What function does the bumper cover fulfill that a standalone bumper couldn't do by itself?
A bumper cover reinforces your standalone bumper in order to provide all-around hood and trunk defense. In particular, if you put in carbon fiber or steel covers unto your bumper, you'll be able to better protect your fuel supply, exhaust, grille, trunk, and car hood from everyday low-speed to deadly high-speed impacts. Aesthetically, it limits scratches and dents on your bumper as well plus it's easily replaceable (versus a damaged bumper that requires more extensive work in removal and replacement). Your headlights and turn signals are better protected from being smashed as well.
- Is the bumper cover easy to install by yourself or do you need technician assistance?
It depends on the bumper cover as well as the model and year of your Acura. Installing bumper covers isn't equal. There are covers that are easier to install and there are covers that are harder to install. Sometimes it's the design of the cover or the bumper that makes it easy or hard to go about installation. However, some of the best covers out there make it simple to go about cover installation, requiring only the most basic of hand tools to go about it. It's a five to fifteen minute job at most.
