Easy Steps on How to Fix a Squeaking or Smearing Audi Wiper Blade
The windshield wipers are among the necessary safety components of a vehicle. They help keep your windshields clear especially during bad weather. Your Audi wiper blades are integral in the performance of your windshield wipers. It is recommended that you change your wiper blades at least once every six months. But, there are just times that we forget to check on these small components-until they fail. Good thing, it's fairly easy to repair or replace wiper blades when they start failing or you start seeing a smeared windshield. Below are some steps on how you can do it:
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Baking Soda/Windex/Vinegar
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Clean rags
- Windshield Wiper Fluid refill
Step 1: Make sure that your wipers can move properly and not digging on the windshield. The wiper should be able to flop over in both directions and not remain vertical as it wipes across the windshield. When this happens, the wiper blades will start squeaking. To fix this, you can twist the wiper arm in the necessary direction until the blades are able to flop equally in both directions.
Step 2: When you start to see smearing on your windshields and the wipers smear water in both directions, check your Audi wiper blades if they are already worn. If yes, you will have to replace them. Blade refills are not expensive, so you can even stock up in case of emergency. Make sure to measure the old blades so you'd be sure to get the same length for the replacement. Better yet, refer to your owner's manual.
Step 3: Dirty windshield and/or Audi wiper blade can also cause smearing problems. If your Audi wiper blades are still fairly new, try cleaning them. Simply wipe the blades with a clean rag dipped in hot, soapy water. Clean off the soap from the blades and wipe the edges with rubbing alcohol. This should reduce the streaks and smears on the windshield. You should also make sure that your windshield is always clean. Use a new wiper fluid to clean the windshield. You can also use vinegar or Windex or baking soda in cleaning.
Step 4: One reason for streaking or smearing wipers is having blades that are too tough. You can remedy this by making your wiper blades softer. You can use WD-40 or rubbing alcohol to soften the blades. Just put a little WD-40 on a clean rag or paper towel and wipe the blade with it. You can do the same with rubbing alcohol. If using WD-40, make sure not to use too much as this can leave the rubber to be dry and brittle.
Step 5: Make sure to replace and refill your windshield washer fluid regularly. A lot of wiper skipping problem stems with insufficient fluid, so check the fluid level and top off if necessary. Also, make sure to check the fluid pump and spray nozzles. They should be able to pump and spray enough amount of fluid necessary for wiper operation. A clogged spray nozzle can easily be fixed by sticking a pin in the nozzle-this will dislodge any gunk that may be clogging it.
