Car design, like fashion, is a copycat world. Whenever a car maker comes up with a fresh, new, and successful design theme, feature, or idea, you can bet that you’ll see those same elements in their competitors’ vehicles within a year or two. Of course, having the same design elements don’t automatically make cars look like each other, but there are times when they do.
Here are some examples of cars that look too much like each other:
- Jaguar S-Type and Kia Amanti
Ah, the days when Kia didn’t have it’s own design language yet. Check out those headlamps and that grille. Pretty similar, yes? And the overall shape of both cars? Definitely. We’re not exactly saying Kia’s designers copied the Jag (or the Mercedes S-Class), but they were clearly inspired by it. Thankfully, both Jaguar and Kia have moved on from this theme and now make much better looking cars.
- Toyota AE86 and Nissan 200SX (S12)

At first glance, you’d think these cars are exactly the same. They’re actually not, they just look so much like each other.
- Volkswagen Phaeton and Volkswagen Passat

The Phaeton is luxobarge, the Passat is not. That they look alike is probably why not many Americans bought a Phaeton. We get that familial looks are a thing for car makers, but they can harm sales (specially of the more expensive models) when cars look alike too much.
- Ford Fusion And Aston Martin Rapide
You could easily mistake these two cars for each other, and you could actually say the same for any Ford that came out after the Fusion and any modern Aston Martin. It’s because of that grille. Even the small Fiesta got slapped with Ford’s new corporate grille, which makes it look a bit like a mini Aston.
- 1968 Ford Mustang and Aston Martin V8
Apparently, Aston Martin was “inspired” by Ford long before Ford slapped all of its vehicles with the Aston Martin-“inspired” grille.
And those are just some of the vehicles that look so much alike, they could be mistaken for each other. Could you think of any other examples? Tell us in the comments.
