The original target was 600 hp. Then it slowly crawled to 675. The team of engineers at work saw it was good, but wasn’t good enough. They reached the 700-mark, slept on it, and dreamt of more speed.
In the end, the insatiable thirst for horsepower dominance settled seven notches higher than the supposed final figure.
That was how it went down for Dodge’s Challenger Hellcat. Such was the feat, but the automaker wasn’t resting on its laurels.
Dodge, to the shrilling excitement of the speed freaks in the car community, has announced it is debuting the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon in the 2017 New York Auto Show this April.
Tagged as a “Hellcat on steroids,” the Demon is presumed to become the fastest muscle car in the world.
The Hellcat, besides priding itself with an impressive 707-hp output, has its 6.2-liter engine designed to push for 650 lb-ft torque. It is offered either with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. According to reports, it “can hit 60 mph from a standstill in the low 3-second range and reach a top speed of 199 mph.”
Moreover, the Hellcat boasts of a quarter mile time of 11.2 seconds on street tires and 10.8 seconds on race slicks, as confirmed by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).
So it’s REALLY a monster! How the Demon will outdo this is quite mind-numbing to imagine. But we’re certain a sure segment of car aficionados will hellaciously be pleased.
“The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is conceived, designed and engineered for a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of Dodge, SRT, Chrysler, and Fiat passenger car brands for FCA North America.
