How long should brakes last? This is a question we hear all the time but unfortunately has no good answer to. Brakes last as long as they will when considering their composition, their use, and the general maintenance of the vehicle. Perhaps the more important thing to notice is consistency rather than length of time.
If you have to replace front brake pads thrice for every 30,000 miles (last at 90,000), and now are at 100,000 miles and already needing new brakes, you may want to consider if the brake pad type or manufacturer changed—or if your driving habits did.
Also, don’t expect front brake pads to last as long as the rear pads (although this does depend as some vehicles seem to go through rear pads just as fast as fronts).
Brake pads come in many different types and formulations, which are useful to consider when finding brake replacements that best suit your needs. High-performance racing brake pads may seem great but may not work as well as desired until warmed up as on the other end of the spectrum, brake pads that claim “lifetime” longevity may sacrifice performance.
Also, here’s one important caveat: simply replacing pads won’t restore braking performance.
Brake rotors (discs) are another part of the equation that needs to be considered. There are many OE replacement and performance brake rotors. Sometimes mating the highest-performance brake pads to the cheapest of the cheapest rotors may not give you the desired outcome or longevity.
So, how long do brake rotors last? Again, it depends. Aggressive, stop-and-go, or heavy hauling or trailering will cause brake rotors (and brake pads) to wear quicker and necessitate more frequent replacement. So if you’re subjecting your vehicle to heavy lifting for the most part, expect your brake rotors to warp before long.
Brakes will last in varying amounts of time. When it’s time for yours to be replaced, keep in mind the choices and characteristics of driving that can help you get the performance you need and the type of brakes that will last long with consistent performance.
