Do you have a noticeable scratch on your windshield? Maybe a rock hit it or maybe your own wipers caused the scratch. Deep marks could be extremely distracting while driving as they may be in your direct line of sight. Never take this issue lightly because a small, repairable scratch could turn into a full blown crack that could only be fixed through a replacement. The following is a quick guide on how to remove deep scratches from your windshield.
First, run your fingers all over the windshield. If your nail gets caught in the scratch, it means it’s too deep. In this case, it might be best to replace the entire windshield. Auto Parts Warehouse offers quality replacement windshield right here: https://bit.ly/2KZFRd7
You will need the following tools and materials to complete the job:
- Glass scratch repair kit
- Rubbing compound containing cerium oxide
- Drill with buffer extension
- Soft cloth
STEP 1: Make a cerium oxide paste.
Cerium oxide is perfect for polishing ceramics, metals, and glass and can also eliminate scratches. With a little bit of water, this chemical turns into paste.
STEP 2: Wash the windshield.
Wash the windshield thoroughly with soap and clean water. Rinse and dry before applying the paste.
STEP 3: Apply paste to the glass.
Gently apply the paste to the damaged area. Be careful not to apply too much as this may result in an uneven finish to your windshield.
STEP 4: Start buffing.
Using a drill with a buffer extension, carefully rub the solution into the scratch. Move over the glass surface from right to left, making sure not to stop in one place. Be mindful of the amount of pressure applied by the drill.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the scratches are gone.
STEP 5: Clean the windshield.
Once the process is done, spray the glass with water and clean it using a soft cloth. Gently rub the glass until the paste residue and haziness are gone.
