So how to tell if a coil pack is bad? Here’s a quick guide.
- Check if there are signs of a bad coil pack:
- Difficulty starting the car
- Backfiring and/or misfiring engine
- Occasional idling
- Poor fuel economy
- Loud engine
- Less car power
- Perform a spark plug test
Take precautionary measures when doing this step. Switch off your vehicle’s engine and open the hood. Locate the spark plugs (refer to your vehicle’s manual for this) and with the help of a spark plug socket, remove the plugs to gain access to the coil pack. Label the wires accordingly for easy reinstallation.
Reattach the plug wire and hold it using insulated pliers. Get a spark tester, attach it to the spark plug, then have someone start the engine. While turning on the engine, ensure that the spark moves from the center electrode to the metal area of the spark tester. Check if there is a spark at the end of the spark plug. If so, your coil pack is good, otherwise, you may have to replace your coil pack.
- Resistance Test
Test the coil with a multimeter. Disconnect the coil pack’s electrical connector then remove the coil pack from your car’s engine using a wrench. Set the ohmmeter/multimeter to 200 ohms range then turn it on. Using a meter lead, attach the spark plug wire terminal to each coil. The primary winding for a coil pack is from 0.4 to 2 Ohms while secondary winding is at 6,000 to 10,000 Ohms. Refer to your vehicle’s manual for proper specifications.

- Switch Signal Test
Using a multimeter, check if the coil pack is receiving 12 volts with the engine turned on. If so, ensure that it receives the switching signal from the control module. Use an LED light to do this. Detach the coil pack from its connector then insert the red lead of the LED into the power circuit connector while the black lead goes into one of the other terminals. Have someone turn on your car’s engine. Do the same process with the other terminal. If the LED flashes in both circuits, your coil pack is bad.
