Diagnosing a Bad Chevrolet Ball Joint

You may not have any idea at what's going on underneath your Chevy until you encounter some difficulty with steering and suffer from rough suspension. Since ball joints are all hidden underneath, you don't get to check their condition as much as you want to. But even if you don't get to take a look at them closely, there's a good set of clues you can rely on. To help you diagnose the problem and troubleshoot it, you have to know the signs of a bad Chevrolet ball joint. If you encounter any of these symptoms, you can give your ball joints and the rest of suspension the needed inspection and service. Here are some diagnostic clues and troubleshooting tips:

            Clunking noise

Bad ball joints will make some unusual clunking noise, which would start with a faint, intermittent banging from the corner. Over time, this noise can become louder or even more pronounced when driving over bumps or dips or when cornering. This is not the same noise as the clicks you can hear due to bad CV joints. The noise is best described as the sound coming from a hammer that's hitting a metal piece. As things get worse, the sound becomes more frequent. This can turn into loud creaking as if the bottom of the vehicle has hit the ground. If you hear this kind of noise, it's probably the best time to check the ball joints and other parts of the suspension to find out what causes it.

            Uneven tire wear

Worn-out ball joints can cause tires to wear out unevenly. You may notice that the outer edges are wearing out faster than the rest of the tread. This indicates ball joint wear. Cupping on the inner edges are also signs of bad ball joints. Cupping can't be detected easily through visual inspection. When you run your hand over the tread of the tire, that's when you'll notice this wear pattern. If wear seems to be concentrated on both edges, the problem is under-inflation. Since abnormal tire wear can be attributed to a whole other set of issues, you have to consider each possible cause to rule out other problems.

            Stiff or sloppy steering

Bad ball joints won't only cause uneven wear. This can also mess up your vehicle's steering. Steering can become stiff or sloppy because of worn-out ball joints. The steering wheel may vibrate as you drive down a straight path on a highway. If you encounter these, don't just ignore them. It may be time for you to inspect the ball joints and the

rest of the suspension to see if anything is disconnected, loose, or damaged. Steering problems can't be attributed to bad ball joints right away, but these are one of the possible causes. The suspension setup may vary per vehicle, so when checking the suspension, you have to consider its design and other remarkable features. Some joints may need to be greased. Sealed ones won't require lubrication, however. If the rubber boots are torn or missing, the ball joints have deteriorated most likely. You have to check to see if it's time to replace them.

For preventive maintenance, follow the recommended schedule for ball joint and suspension inspection and service.

            Mevotech Ball Joint

Coated with black oxide, the Mevotech ball joint is engineered to last and take the abuse of even the most stringent of routes. The surface coating makes the aftermarket part resist various corrosion agents such as bad weather conditions and road debris, making the ball joint perform and operate longer than the stock part. It is designed with grease fittings to make cleaning and flushing out of contaminants more convenient. Its internal components are made of highly-durable metal bearings that guarantee optimum steering and remarkable handling. The part has undergone a knurling process that makes the ball joint work normally even in the event of wearing of the control arm. The Mevotech ball joint comes with 30-day return and money-back policy.

            Replacement Ball Joint

Supplied by a brand known to offer affordable and quality aftermarket auto parts, the Replacement ball joint is a good part to take the place of a damaged stock ball joint. It is designed and engineered to perform the same way as or even better than the stock part. The part carries a great value as it is made of high-grade steel, tough plastic, and reliable rubber bushings for optimum performance that can withstand the most abusive driving situations. Just like all aftermarket auto parts offered by the brand, the Replacement ball joint is covered by a one-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

            Moog Ball Joint

Boasting of its remarkable quality, the Moog ball joint is an OE replacement part that can be installed easily as it was engineered to directly fit a compatible vehicle. It comes with the mounting hardware to make installation easier. Also, it comes with ball joint boots to protect the part from external contaminants. It is made of fine-grade alloy that offers unequaled strength that provides accurate and solid steering even on the most difficult situations. Its metal gusher bearings are powder-coated to resist early wearing of the part. The Moog ball joint is greasable, making it easy to clean and flush out dirt that has entered the part.
