Select your Chevy Brake Caliper model from the list below.

Common Signs of a Faulty Chevrolet Brake Caliper

The brake caliper is an important component of the brake system. Together with the brake pad, the brake caliper allows the vehicle to slow down or stop. When you have a faulty brake caliper, it is very dangerous as it may cause braking failure and accidents. Generally, some symptoms indicate a malfunctioning Chevrolet brake caliper.

            Brake fluid leakage

If you see a puddle of liquid under your vehicle, you may have a defective brake caliper. Spots with leaks will have wet fluid marks on them. You can get someone to work the brakes while you examine its performance. You can also observe whether the brake fluid is reaching the brake caliper by attaching a hose to the air bleed valve and immersing the other tip of the hose in a clear container that is half filled with clean brake fluid. When your helper step on the brakes and no fluid flows into the container, the brake lines or the master cylinder might have problems. However, if bubbles and additional fluids run into the clear container, then you have a faulty Chevrolet brake caliper. A skilled mechanic must replace the defective brake caliper immediately.

Vehicle pulling to one side when braking

When your vehicle pulls to one side when you apply the brakes or constantly has to replace your brake pads due to premature wear, the brake caliper must be sticking. The caliper must be cleaned and lubricated regularly to avoid it sticking and leading to malfunction. You can make sure that the caliper is well lubricated by observing how smooth it moves. If the brake pad seems to move when braking but the caliper stays immobile, the caliper is damaged or must be oiled. Make sure to use appropriate grease or lubricating products to ensure quality performance and durability.

            Unusual sounds

When you hear unusual sounds while you are slowing down or braking, the sounds may be signs of a malfunctioning Chevrolet brake caliper. Typically, the noises sound like squeaking and squealing. Together with these unpleasant sounds, some jerking and shuddering motions can occur when you stepped on the brake pedal.

            Illuminated brake warning light

An illuminated brake warning light on your dashboard must not be ignored. This warning sign may mean an issue with your brake calipers or other areas in your brake system. Although the brake warning light is not intended to be a certain conclusion of a specific area in your brake system, it must not be taken lightly as this is an indication that something is malfunctioning and may lead to performance failure and injuries if left unrepaired. Usually, your mechanic will conduct a thorough brake warning light check-up and make sure that all components of your brake system are performing properly.

            Other troubleshooting tips

You can also observe if the piston is functioning properly. When you stepped on the brakes, the caliper should float. If the brake pad in front of the piston does not move when braking, the piston is defective. It is highly recommended to change the brake caliper altogether if the piston is malfunctioning.
