Repair Your Chevrolet Bug Shield the Cheapest Way
If you're a car enthusiast looking to preserve the beauty of your vehicle on a daily basis, installing a bug shield will do you wonders. A bug shield is made from durable plastic that offers protection from damaging particles such as small rocks and insects. As durable as it is, the bug shield will still get damaged in the form of small cracks. Instead of buying a new one, you can repair the damage yourself and save money in the process. Fixing a Chevrolet bug shield might take a while, but it won't be difficult if you follow these steps.
Difficulty level: Easy
Things you'll need:
- Acrylic solvent cement
- Squeeze bottle applicator
- Spring clamps
- Thin scrap plastic
- Painter's making tape
- Dish detergent
- Working gloves
Step 1:Carefully remove the Chevrolet bug shield from the front of your car. This will prevent the car's finish from being damaged by the solvent cement.
Step 2:Clean the damaged shield with a dish detergent to remove oil or grease present. This will allow the solvent cements to do its job. Allow the shield to dry completely.
Step 3:Once the shield is completely dry, you can now start the gluing process. Fit the broken pieces together, making sure they are butted against one another tightly.
Step 4:If the crack creates a gap on the shield, cover it with a thin scrap plastic. Glue the scrap plastic at the back of the gap to provide reinforcement.
Step 5:Once the broken pieces are fitted, clamp the cracked area using spring clamps. When the pieces are held in place with the cracked edges clearly lined up, mark the clamp's positions with the masking tape. This will make repositioning the pieces easier after solvent cement is applied.
Step 6:Fill the squeeze bottle applicator to the halfway point with solvent cement. Create a vacuum by squeezing the bottle while upright then slightly releasing the pressure. This will keep the glue from spilling.
Step 7:You can now glue the pieces together by applying a thin line of solvent to connect each of the broken pieces. Follow the marks made by the masking tape and clamp the pieces together for two hours.
Step 8:You can put additional support to the cracked area by applying solvent cement at the backside and gluing scrap plastic to use as backing. Applying thin plastic scraps can also cover small gaps formed by the broken pieces.
Step 9:Clamp the cracked area altogether and leave it for six hours to dry the solvent cement.
Step 10:After six hours, remove the clamp and you can now mount the shield back on the front end of your car. Your Chevrolet bug shield is now good as new.
Some Tips and Recommendations
- When covering a gap with thin plastic, make sure the plastic covers the same length of the crack but one inch wider. This will provide more support to the damaged area.
- Once the bug shield is fixed, you can now try to restore its shine by cleaning it using regular cleaning materials like car soap, plastic polish, and water.
