How to Install a Chevrolet Bumper
Replacing your Chevrolet vehicle's bumper is actually something you could do by yourself. A bumper cover is secured to your fender by two screws on each side of the part. After these screws are uninstalled, you can yank the bumper out of your car and replace it with a new one. However, this depends on the model of bumper. Regardless, bumper replacement should take any more than 20-30 minutes to do with the right tools on hand.
What You'll Need
- New front bumper inner beam
- Ratchet wrench
- Socket wrench set
- New rear bumper
- Wheel chocks
- Box wrench set
- Torque wrench
- New front bumper cover
- Mechanic's creeper
Step 1:Park your Chevy in a place with a hard, level ground such as your garage or driveway. Place the stick in park and set your handbrake firmly so that you won't end up moving the vehicle away from its place.
Step 2:Place wheel chocks on your front wheels for good measure. Use the mechanic's creeper to wheel yourself underneath the front bumper area then familiarize yourself with all the points where the bumper cover and bumper beam attach to your car.
Step 3:Look for your ancillary and fog lights' electrical connectors. On certain models of the Chevrolet brand, you might need to pull the inner fender liners around that area in order to access the attachment bolts and remove them from there.
Step 4:From you placement from below the Chevy, proceed to disengage your battery's negative and positive connectors. Also remove the electrical plugs that power your ancillary and fog lights for good measure to avoid electrocution from them.
Step 5:Get some assistants to stand on either side of the bumper cover so that when you remove it as carefully as possible, they're there to support its weight. Although it's supposedly lightweight, it's still quite unwieldy (plus you don't want to drop it).
Step 6:Tell your helpers to walk away from your Chevrolet with the cover in tow then set it off to the side. Check out the bumper beam to see if it's damaged extensively or if the cracks are mostly superficial.
Step 7:If the bumper cover is extensively damaged, replacement is your best option. Otherwise, invest in bumper cover repair. Get your assistants to hold the bumper beam too as you remove its attachment bolts, bracing its weight in their hands.
Step 8:Ask your helpers to do the same thing they did with the cover to the beam, walking away from the vehicle in order to lay the beam off of the side.
Step 9:It's at this point that you can replace the old beam with the new one, along with the cover. Just do the reverse order of Steps 1 to 8 in attaching one part and bolt to the next.
Step 10:Do the same when it comes to bumper cover replacement. After replacement has been accomplished, that's when you can reconnect all your electrical plugs to your lights and reengage the battery.
How complex this job is depends on how extensive the damage is to your bumper and how many parts need replacement. If it's just the bumper cover, you might only need to remove two screws and bolts at best. If the bumper beam is included, then you'll have more things to take off and more bolts to account for. The more damaged the bumper the more wrenches and layers you'll need for bumper replacement.
