How to Fix Gouged Chevrolet Cowl Hood
Installing a Chevrolet cowl hood is one great option for a facelift. It promises cool muscular look, a significant aesthetic improvement that you can give your Chevy. However, for drag racers and other racing enthusiasts, a mere muscular facelift can only cause the vehicle to run a bit slower due to its effect on aerodynamics. But because cowl hoods help the radiator dissipate unnecessary engine heat better, racers want them more than common hoods. Most cowl hoods are custom made, though, so a replacement is hard to find and even repairing a scratch can be a challenge.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Things you'll need:
- Chemical-resistant gloves
- Buffing compound
- Disposable spray gun
- Gel coat
- Gel coat reducer
- Heat gun
- Powdered fiberglass filler or chop
- Rotary tool
- Safety glasses
- Sanding block
- Sandpapers (1200-, 800-, 600-, 240-, 150-, 80-grit)
Step 1: Clean the repair surface. If the area has pinstripes, you have to make sure that no adhesive residue is left with the aid of an adhesive remover. A heat gun can help remove old pinstripes fast. Just make sure that the surface doesn't get burnt. For painted area of the cowl hood, use 1,200-grit sandpaper.
Step 2: Prepare the repair area. Create a U-shaped groove into the scratch using a V-shaped grinder bit. And then, clear off any light scratches by sanding with 80-grit to 240-grit until smooth.
Step 3: Mix the filler to a peanut butter-like putty consistency. Filler can be mixed with a gel coat that will closely match the color of your Chevrolet cowl hood. Light scratches are cured by applying the filler through a spray gun. But for deep gouges, the filler needs to be thick. Remember to protect yourself with chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and respirator.
Step 4: Fill the gouge to a little mound, and let it cure for about two hours or until hard. When the filler is fully hardened, smoothen out using 80-grit sandpaper.
Step 5: Mix another gel coat that will be used over the sanded down repair area. This one is for the finish, so take note that this time the chop is not going to be included. And, don't forget to mix it with gel coat reducer so it can go through the spray nozzle.
Step 6: Spray the patches with the new gel coat mix in just short bursts. Expect the result to be in splatters instead of the smooth finish that spray paints make. When done, let the new coat cure until fully hardened.
Step 7: Achieve a perfectly smooth finish by sanding down. Start sanding with 600-grit, and then, sand down with 800-grit sandpaper. You will then notice that the result is not yet so smooth. And so, get the wet 1,200-grit sandpaper, and sand again. After that, the patched area on your Chevrolet cowl hood will achieve that perfect finish.
Step 8: Finish up using wool buffing pad and buffing compound. Apply the compound directly on the pad, and then, buff with medium pressure and low speed. Be sure to reduce the pressure as the compound dries.
Step 9: Clean, wax, and see your cowl hood looking new again.
