How to Fix a Problematic Chevrolet Fuel Injector
When the check engine light is on due to faulty Chevrolet fuel injector, the car can still manage to run quite normally. But if you could only see through the engine, a damaged fuel injector will fail or not properly spray fuel into its designated cylinder. Subsequently, that particular cylinder will be unable to deliver power no matter how much fuel it consumes. The next thing that will happen is that your car will run roughly, and sometimes misfires. It is crucial then to take notice of these changes so you can make the necessary repair.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Things you'll need:
- Fuel injector cleaner or cleaning kit
- Fuel injector filter
- Fuel injector puller
Step 1: Always choose a well ventilated area when working with any auto part that has something to do with fuel to avoid any accident due to its flammable compounds. With regards to that, keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
Step 2: Start with cleaning the fuel injector because the most common problem encountered by fuel injectors is clogging. To do this, remove first the fuel pump.
Step 3: Reroute fuel to the fuel tank using a U-tube. Make sure to also remove the pressure regulator before attaching the fuel injector cleaning kit to the fuel port.
Step 4: Let the pressure from the fuel tank ease by removing its cover. This is important because pressure buildup in the tank can lead to accident, and we don't want that to happen.
Step 5: It's time to power off the pump so that you can turn the engine over, and allow the fuel injector cleaner to run through the pump for about 10 minutes.
Step 6: After letting the cleaner run through its course completely, reinstall the fuel pump. Also put the fuel cover back on along with the pressure regulator. After that, restart the engine to check normal operation.
Step 7: If after cleaning, you see fuel leaks from the injector, replace the o-rings. But before moving on to this process, make sure that the engine is cold. Also make sure that there is no pressure in the fuel injector by removing fuel cap, and then, placing it back again.
Step 8: Also inspect the fuel injector filter. If it is already clogged with dirt, you will have to install a new one. This should allow enough fuel to freely flow into the Chevrolet fuel injector whenever the engine asks for it.
Step 9: If all three attempts fail, you need to hammer the fuel injector to remove blockage. Make sure to only hit the injector with low force, and be certain to hit only the portion where the clog sits. Don't forget to wear your safety goggles for protection.
Step 10: If the old injector is no longer repairable, get ready to install a new Chevrolet fuel injector. Wear goggles and gloves for protection.
Step 11: Remove the fuel lines, rails, and wirings from the fuel injector. Unscrew the fuel plug, and then disconnect the fuel injector using a fuel injector puller.
Step 12: Follow the steps in reverse manner to install the new injector.
