Installing a Chevrolet Lowering Kit
The vehicle's height can be dropped a few inches. The lower stance can create a sportier look for the vehicle. The lowered suspension can also increase the aerodynamic qualities of the Chevy and improve traction and handling. Because of the lower center of gravity, this can also reduce its rollover risks, especially for bigger vehicles. The added stiffness from the lowered suspension is desired by some drivers. This leads to greater driving comfort. There are several ways to achieve a lowered vehicle stance or reduced ground clearance. A Chevrolet lowering kit can provide everything you need in a box such as drop springs or lowering blocks. Lowering kits include different components for lowering the suspension. Choose one that you're most comfortable with. The kit should be specifically designed with the vehicle's specs in mind. Different methods are listed below.
Required skill level: Moderate to Expert
Needed tools and materials
- Lowering kit
- Hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, socket and ratchet)
Preparing for the task
You have to familiarize yourself with the suspension setup, which may vary per vehicle. Read your vehicle manual to get a basic understanding of the suspension design and how suspension components are attached. Get a lowering kit that best suits the suspension of the vehicle. Also base your selection on the kind of kit you're most comfortable to use. Check what's included in the box. Kits could have their own installation instructions or guide.
Altering the vehicle's leaf springs
You can make some modifications on the leaf springs of the vehicle to get a lower ground clearance. Remove the leaf springs from the rear suspension. You may use a reverse shackle or install the leaf springs from the kit. Another way to do this is to reverse the setup. Position the axle atop the leaf spring. A flip kit is used here. This may be paired with lowering blocks to increase the drop. You may have to put a C-notch on top of the rear axle to create a greater clearance between the frame and axle. This will depend on how low you want to go and the instructions on the kit.
Changing the coil springs
Coil springs can be manipulated to give the vehicle that lower stance. These springs can be foiund at the front and/or rear suspension, attached onto the A-frame or the axles. Check the suspension setup of the vehicle. Replace the stock coil springs with shorter springs from the kit. Having the springs cut isn't your best option. This can compromise the spring's structural integrity.
Replacing the springs and shocks
The stock springs and shocks can be traded out. The kit may include just the right pieces to modify the suspension for a lower vehicle stance. Aside from replacing the springs, air lines, and an air compressor may be installed, among other things. The rear leaf springs can be replaced by a 4-link setup.
Switching to hydraulic cylinders
Hydraulic cylinders can be used in place of the stock springs. As this hydraulic system is set up, you may also have to add an internal control system and install hydraulic pumps.
Lowering the torsion bar
The torsion bars can be adjusted using the torsion bar key. Some kits may include these components in the package.
