Useful Pointers when Buying a Chevrolet Spark Plug Wire
Also known as ignition cable, the spark plug wire transfers the spark from the ignition coil to the spark plug that fires up the air-fuel mixture within the cylinders, leading to engine start-up and keeping your vehicle running on the road. During vehicle tune-up or maintenance, the spark plug wires must be checked and replaced if needed to prevent a faulty spark plug from causing issues in the vehicle's engine. To get the right Chevrolet spark plug wire, here are some useful guidelines to keep in mind:
Different types of plug wire for different usages
Different types of Chevrolet spark plug wire are available and are classified depending on their recommended usage, resistance, ohm rating, RFI suppression, fit, and even color.
- Carbon core “OEM” wires: Designed to run well with factory vehicles, carbon core “OEM” wires are highly suitable for daily driving that does not require the engine to go beyond factory specifications. However, these OEM wires need to be regularly changed because the carbon core cracks or wears down in time. These OEM plug wires are consumables and must be part of the regular replacement cycle. For these carbon core wires, you should avoid using high-powered ignition systems, which shortens the service life of these factory plug wires.
- Solid core wires: Usually built with a stainless steel or copper core that is a great conductor of high electrical current, these solid core wires have no RFI suppression abilities, making them unsuitable for electronic ignition systems. Because the frequencies affect the electronic modules in the area, these solid core wires are used only on high performance vehicles that use magnetos or breaker points and non-computerized electronic ignition system. These wire cores can withstand high-energy ignitions and will not wear out like carbon conductor wires. However, there are some selected wire cores that have effectively suppressed the RFI and EMI emissions while still maintaining their low resistant conductivity.
- Low-resistance “spiral” wires: Highly recommended for high-performance street vehicles and racing applications, these spiral wires are engineered by winding fine wires around the core. The wires are usually alloy of copper, nickel, tin, and combinations of these three metals. Because of the winding of wires, they lower both the EMI and RFI while still maintaining their low resistance. These low-resistance spiral wires are also suitable when upgrading the engine, which increases the cylinder pressure or adding more fuel to the combustion.
Other things to consider
When choosing the appropriate Chevrolet spark plug wire, you must also consider the size. Although some wires may come larger, the insides of these wires may actually have a smaller wire wrapped with additional insulation. Also, a larger wire does not always mean better performance over the basic set. In fact, there are racers who use smaller spark plug wires on their racing cars to save on weight. To ensure optimal spark plug wire performance, it is advisable to change the plug wires as often as you change your spark plugs.
