How to Replace a Chevrolet Water Pump in 10 Steps
The Chevrolet water pump plays a vital role in your engine's pulley system-it pulls the antifreeze from within the radiator. Needed tools and materials:
- Socket wrench set
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Large adjustable wrench

Removing the intake tube
Carefully disconnect the negative battery cable using your 8mm socket wrench. Gently loosen the two clamps by the throttle body and air box, and use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully break the seal. After that, you may now lift the intake tube out of your Chevrolet.
Removing the fan shroud
Using your socket wrench, carefully remove the two 10 millimeter bolts. Unclasp the small hose that is located at the shroud. Take away the pins around the fan shroud. In order to pull the fan shroud, you need to gently work the hose back and forth.
Removing the fan
Break loose the center nut by using a large adjustable wrench. Gently pull the fan out and place it in a safe area.
Removing the serpentine belt
You need to double check if your routing diagram is clear enough to read. Next, loosen the 15mm bolt that is located in the tensioner using your socket ratchet.
Draining the radiator
Carefully release the lower radiator hose and gently drain the fluid into the drain pan. Carefully squeeze the clamp using your pliers and pull it back to drain the fluid.
Disconnecting the hoses from the water pump
Loosen and pull back the clamp to disconnect the radiator hose. Gently and carefully pry the hose using a small flathead screwdriver, and then wiggle it off. Make certain that all the water were already drained from the water pump. Carefully disconnect the heater hose. Remember to place the catch pan underneath to catch any water.
Removing the tension arm
Carefully remove the tension arm from the water pump using an appropriate wrench, and then set it aside.
Removing the water neck and pump
Remove the two bolts using your 10mm socket wrench. Take out the six bolts from the water pump using a torque wrench. Scrape off any residual gasket material using a sharp razor blade. Failure to remove any residual can create a bad seal.
Installing a new water pump
Place the new gasket plates on your water pump with the use of the two bolts. Carefully place the replacement water pump and correctly put the bolts using a torque wrench. Get the new O-ring and place it gently into your thermostat housing.
Reassembling the components
Carefully reconnect all the hoses and put back the belt tensioner. Place the serpentine belt back. You also need to place back the fan shroud, fan, and the intake pipe. Top off your fluid using a high-quality mixture. Make sure that everything is reassembled correctly before reconnecting the battery. Properly reconnect the battery and start your engine. Let it run for 30 seconds so that the coolant can circulate properly.
