Fixing a Dented Dodge Fender
Fender-benders are quite common. And if ever it turned out to be a bad day for you, with your Dodge fender dented or dinged, you wouldn't always have to run to the nearest auto body shop. You wouldn't have to spend a couple hundred dollars just to fix and hide that tiny dent. Here's a quick and simple guide to repairing a dented fender:
Difficulty level: Moderate
Things you'll need:
- Body hammer
- Dent puller
- 180-grit sandpaper
- 220-grit sandpaper
- 300-grit sandpaper
- Body filler
- Tinted auto paint
- Clear coat paint
- Wax and grease remover
- Microfiber towel
- Plastic squeegee
- Masking tape
Step 1: Knock out the dent with a body hammer or a dent puller. You have to get access to the fender's underside to be able to hammer out the dent. You can get through it through the hood or trunk or even by reaching up from the underneath. Use a body hammer and carefully work on the dented portions. If access to the fender's rear is difficult or obstructed, a dent puller would be a good tool to use as an alternative. To pull out the dent, you have to drill some small holes in the middle of the dent and around it. The screw tip of the puller should go through the hole, allowing you to gently push out the dent by driving the tool's handle up and down. Be sure not to over-pull. Work on all the holes until the surface is already even.
Step 2:Remove the paint using a grinder or 180-grit sandpaper. Grind or sand away the paint from the dent, extending up to 2 to 3 inches beyond it. Do this until it's down to the bare metal. This will be the prep-up for applying body filler.
Step 3:Apply some body filler on the sanded area using a plastic squeegee to spread it. The body filler should go slightly above the fender. Allow the filler to dry for about 2 hours before leveling the area using sandpaper until the surface is smooth and ready to be primed.
Step 4:Coat the repaired area with primer. First cover the surrounding with paper using masking tape so that they won't be coated. Spread wax and grease remover with a microfiber towel before you apply a thick coat of primer. Let the primer to dry. This may take about half an hour. Using 300-grit sandpaper, smooth out the area before applying some wax and grease remover on this portion again. nd grease remover.
Step 5:Finish the repaired area by painting it. Use the right color scheme, one that matches the color of the vehicle. The can must be 15 to 20 cm. away from the portion that will be painted. Apply three coats of body paint. For each coat, let the area dry for about 15 minutes in between. To cover the are evenly and well, use horizontal strokes for the layers. Once dried, add three layers of clear coat paint. Finish this off by removing the masking tape and paper.
