How to Install a Ford Tail Light
Taillight removal can get cumbersome, even when dealt with by expert Ford mechanics. The reason for this negative sentiment over what's supposed to be a routine process is the difficulty of not breaking the plastic pegs that hold the taillight assembly together and in place. If only they used sturdier screws or tougher fasteners, then it wouldn't be as much as an issue.
What You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Replacement bulb
- Socket wrench set
- Torx screwdriver (optional)
Step 1:From behind the taillight you wish to repair (which could be the one on the driver's side or the passenger's side as well as both) there's a panel that you should locate and access by popping the trunk of your Ford vehicle.
Step 2:With a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two screws that are fastening the panel into your automobile. Get a safe place to set aside the screws so you won't lose them. After screw removal, the panel will pull straight off without much resistance.
Step 3:Search for the plastic pins and the spring assembly that are holding your taillight setup into place. Stand behind your Ford with the taillight directly upfront in order to find the pins from that specific position.
Step 4:Pull the taillight directly towards the car's rear passenger seat by bending over and looking into the hole left by the removed panel. The plastic pins are on the left side if you're replacing driver's side tail lights and vice-versa for passenger side tail lights.
Step 5:Pull the right side of the driver's side taillight or the left side of the passenger side taillight slowly before gently twisting it till it slips off of the plastic pegs altogether. Remember to be methodical in your removal.
Step 6:Regardless of whether you're working on the driver's or passenger taillight, expect a spring bracket to pull out of the panel hole when all is said and done (which you also have to extract as carefully as possible).
Step 7:While the wires are still attached to it, hold the taillight assembly in your hand. At this point, inspect it and replace any broken plastic parts with your taillight replacement kit. Taillight bulb replacement requires you to twist or unscrew the old bulb to the left.
Step 8:As the pressure is released, the bulb will pop out and allow you to put in a new taillight bulb in its place. Put the new bulb into position and push it down slightly, twisting it to the right this time to screw it in tightly.
Step 9:When it comes to placing back the tail light assembly into your Ford, you need to hold it at a slight angle to allow you to insert it back unto the pair of plastic pins.
Step 10:Push the assembly gently and twist it slightly until the spring clip slips back into the hole. Then, snap everything back into position by pushing firmly. Put the panel back and screw it on properly to finish the job.
When getting a replacement tail light, always remember that the one for the passenger's side is different from the one on the driver's side and they shouldn't be confused with one another. You should also make certain that the bulb is included in the kit if you're in need of a new bulb as well, since there are times when bulbs are sold separately, much to your own inconvenience.
