Steps on How to Restore the Honda Axle Assembly
When you hear some grinding noises when driving, your Honda axle assembly might be having a problem. This is quite common for vehicles regularly travelling on rough roads. Because of the bumps, turns, and potholes, the axle assembly and its components become stressed. Axle components are easily damaged when they are not well greased and protected from contaminants. To fix your malfunctioning axle, here are some steps to guide you:
Difficulty level: Difficult
Things you'll need:
- Jack and jack stands
- Bench vise
- Flat-head screwdriver and marker
- Socket wrench and wire cutters
- Snap ring pliers
- Electrical tape
- Boot band tool
- Small punch
- Safety glasses
- Protective gloves
Step 1:Before taking out the axle, take note of the side you are removing. If it is the driver's side, you need to drain out some transmission fluid. If it is the passenger's side, there is no need to drain anything.
Step 2:Place your Honda vehicle on jack stands and take off the wheel of the axle that you need to change. Use a socket wrench to remove the axle nut.
Step 3:Next, move the steering knuckle out of the way by loosening the strut bolts. Make sure to also remove the bolts on the brake lines and wheel speed sensor to reduce stress and pressure. This will ensure they are loose when you start moving the knuckle. Another way to move the knuckle is by separating it at the lower ball joint. Take out the ball joint nut and separate the knuckle from the control arm.
Step 4:When the steering knuckle is free to move about, use a hammer to gently hit the axle out of the knuckle. Then, get a pry bar or a large screwdriver to pop out the axle from the transmission. Remove the whole axle from the vehicle.
Step 5:Once the axle is off your Honda axle assembly, clamp it into a bench vise, with the transmission side facing up. Use wire cutters to cut off the metal boot bands. Then, move the boot back to wipe off the grease and mark each inboard bearing with a marker pen. Make sure to correctly indicate each bearing's placement on the inboard joint housing as well as the direction it faces.
Step 6:Take out the inboard joint housing and bearings carefully. Use snap ring pliers to take out the stopper ring. Move the slider off as well as the inboard boot, the dynamic damper, and the outboard boot.
Step 7: Inspect the outboard joint housing for cracks, wear, and flawed movement. Use appropriate cleaning products to wipe the housing while taking note of its surface condition. Make sure to clean the axle and all of its parts thoroughly. You can use electrical tape to wrap the inboard splines so as not to damage the inboard and outboard boots.
Step 8:Slide onto the axle the clean outboard boot, dynamic damper, and inboard boot. Remove the electrical tape and mount in the spider as well as the stopper ring.
Step 9: Reattach the bearings. Make sure to apply some grease into the inboard joint housing. Put in the inboard boot and replacement boot bands in place. Tighten the band and use a center punch to secure the band in place. Use wire cutters to cut the band.
Step 10: Use the same procedures to install the small end's boot band and outboard joint.
Step 11: Reattach all the bolts and nuts on the axle. Put back the wheel and check the whole Honda axle assembly.
