Innovative Jaguar Then and Now
Jaguar does not fall behind in introducing innovations to improve the design and development of cars. Its recent models are made with new technologies and advanced materials that keep them true to the luxury and sports car essence of a Jaguar. At the same time, these innovations bring the brand to a higher and more competitive status.
Aluminum: Light and easy
Jaguar is recognized as one of the first companies to use aluminum on the frames of its cars with the 1948 XK 120 sports car as opposed to heavier steel. The featherlike, yet tough, material makes it very ideal for racing applications especially since lap times and top speeds can be affected by the car's weight. Recent models of the XE, XF, XK and XJ have all-aluminum chasis which makes these lighter and tougher than ever.
Aluminum is also one of the ways for Jaguar to care for the environment. Even if recycled, the quality of new versus recycled aluminum does not differ, making reused ones suitable to put back on the production line. This can be seen on the 2010 XJ's, where 50% of the chasis is made of recycled aluminum. Not only does it make the car environmentally friendly, it also gives it less bodyweight, and better fuel economy.
KERS: Efficient and powerful
The Kinetic energy regeneration system (KERS) slowly makes its way to production Jaguar models. This technology was first developed for Formula One racing teams like Ferrari and McLaren to produce more speed and power for their cars. The system works by storing kinetic energy, due to slowing down to the flywheel, and releasing it for use during acceleration. The system as a whole is a way to add more power to the engine without using more fuel.
Even though the technology is still being tested on concept cars, Jaguar believes the system can be developed for regular production cars. One of the models that feature the KERS is the F-type to be released in 2013.
Jaguar Leaps into the Future
The path to the future looks clear and bright for Jaguar. In a world where power and sustainability seem irreconcilable, the company does its best to combine both in the design and performance of their luxury sports cars. With futuristic looks, turbo engines, and environmentally friendly, Jaguar enthusiasts will definitely want to get a piece of this beast in the coming years.
Concept Experiment on the Road
To celebrate the company's 75 years in the auto industry, it plans to release a production model of the concept car Jaguar C-X75: a hybrid supercar that boasts quickness and cleanliness. Powered by both an electric motor and a 1.6Liter inline-4 engine, the car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds. Working with fellow British racing team, Williams F1, the C-X75 includes a Formula One-developed technology, KERS (Kinetic Energy Regeneration System), that gives the engine almost 500HP and that reaches a top speed of 200 mph. Speed is only half the picture as the C-X75 sets the trend by creating environmentally friendly sports cars. It is projected to have emissions as low as 99g/km, making this car a very mean, yet clean, machine.
This raises the bar, not only for Jaguar, but for the whole car industry as well. Only 200 units are expected to be made and released by 2014.
Reincarnation of an Icon
In 2013, the company plans on releasing a new car similar to the iconic E-type: the F-type. The closeness of the two models' names is intended as Jaguar hopes to capture and exceed the hype and buzz created by the classic. A 380 HP, 3.0Liter V6 sits at the heart of this roadster. Despite having a small, fuel efficient engine, it pushes the F-type from 0 to 60mph in 5 seconds. With competition from other icons such as the Mercedes-Benz SL, the Porsche 911 Cabrio, and the Audi R8 roadster, the company hopes that the F-type introduces the Jaguar legacy to a new generation of enthusiasts.
